Love this program, but getting it to work with Snow Leopard is such a kludge. Performance is erratic. Wait for the new version.

Intro: As a writer, I find Spell Catcher X is indispensable. It is one of my top 5 must have apps. I'm glad Apple integrated reasonable spell checking, but it really doesn't come even close to all the features built into Spell Catcher. Why the app ever got slammed here at VT is beyond my comprehension. And yes, it runs fine in 10.6. But see the caveats about 64-bit app compatibility with the current version.

Snow Leopard Compatibility - Version: 10.3.2, 9/3/2009 01:15AM PST

Spell Catcher is Snow Leopard compatible. What it is not, yet, is 64 bit compatible. So it still works in 32 bit apps and can work in 64 bit apps if they are adjusted to run in 32 bit mode. I'm enjoying the new speed of 64 bit apps like Safari so I'm not inclined to set them to 32 bit. Since Apple's own spell checker works in these apps, Spell Catcher is a bit of overkill anyway. And these same apps work with the new symbol and text substitution feature in Snow Leopard so this is one more element of Spell Catcher (and TypeIt4Me) that is being incorporated into the Mac OS. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to import my custom Spell Catcher dictionaries or my TypeIt4Me shortcuts list into Apple's tools. For the time being, therefore, I will get by with the Apple versions until Spell Catcher and TypeIt4Me are adapted for full OS X 10.6 compatibility.
