Must have utility for Macbook (Pro) users

This is a simple little utility that sits in the menubar and allows you to control the sleep mode in the Macbook (Pro). You can close the lid and the machine will continue to do important processing, say when you travel with it in your bag etc. I would not expect any problems with heating although of course one uses these kinds of things with own responsibility --- after all, expect there to be plenty of sensors inside your brim that checks the temperature e.g. of the processor. Also, the Macbook (Pro) indeed IS designed to run also with lid closed e.g. with an external monitor and it is just silly that Apple does not buy this piece of software and puts it into Mac OS X Snow Leopard! Anyway, well worth the symbolic fee (shareware). Try it out first, that's the idea of course.

I use this only for the ability to prevent my MBP from sleeping when I close the lid. With version 2.3.1, it works exactly how it should. I can close the lid, and as long as I keep it closed for at least 30 seconds, when I open it the screen is off and all I need to do is touch the trackpad and instantly the screen is back on.
Using this I can listen to iTunes or download overnight with the screen closed and off. Combined with smcFanControl, I never have any issue with my MBP getting too hot. Great product!

Great... once I got it working

I am using SleepLess to keep my powebook from sleeping when I close the lid because I keep a VPN running while I'm wireless and it's a pain to have to reconnect as I run around the office to meetings with my laptop after it goes to sleep every time I close the lid. I had dabbled with using insomnia before (http://binaervarianz.de/projekte/programmieren/meltmac/), but I found the lack of interface clunky. SleepLess provides that interface I needed to make insomnia useful. The only problem I experienced is that the version of insomnia that came with the SleepLess package (/Applications/SleepLess.app/Contents/Resources/insomnia.kext) wouldn't load for me. I had a copy of the kext file I had previously downloaded from the insomnia site and replaced the one included with the package and everything works great now. I've only been using it for a couple of days, but no problems so far.
Have to reboot each time I use it - Version: 2.2.1, 3/30/2006 10:28AM PST

I used it for about 10 minutes, on 2 occasions on my iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz. Listened to iTunes with the lid closed. Both times the machine refused to wake from sleep immediately afterward and I had to reboot! Battery had plenty of charge.

Except for the laptop closed provision, Jiggler (search for it) has been doing this for me for several years now and it's free.

Version 2.0 not for me - Version: 2.0, 12/5/2005 01:03PM PST

I find SleepLess a useful and easy solution for the few occasions when I want to prevent sleep temporarily. I then launch SleepLess and again quit it when done. I like an application that I use that way to show its icon in the Dock, not in the menu bar. Version 2.0 appears in the menu bar. For me the menu bar is typically for functions that I use often and therefore keep available permanently. I will stick to version 1.7.1 that can be set to appear in the Dock only.
Cool but..

Downloaded this for the first time - I'm not getting the fact that you can turn the feature on and off? It seems that the only thing it works on are the preferences, which doesn't matter anyway as those can be changed through the energy saver.
The only part that really works is checking and unchecking the sleep on close lid functionality -
I'd like for this to be an option only when I turn sleepless on - not when I check or uncheck it..
Anyone experienced it?

Have been using version 1.3.3 on my IMac and Power Book and even with Tiger installed it worked fine. Installed the new version 1.7 today and now I can't get any of my machines to go to sleep when I want. Ended up deleting version 1.7 and going back to 1.3.3 which is fine.

I was able to get SleepLess v1.6 to keep my 12" PowerBook (OS 10.3.8) from going to sleep immediately upon lid close, but inevitably it'd still sleep after 4 minutes of non-use (this is apparently a 'feature' of OS 10.3; SleepLess works as advertised under OS 10.2). However, by also having Jiggler from Stick Software running, thereby creating mouse movement every 2 minutes, I've succeeded in keeping the system perpetually awake. This is valuable to me because I do laptop-based audio recording and want to keep the lid closed when I don't need to watch the display, to protect the system
Oh, did I mention you'd save almost 10 dollars over Sleepless because Caffeine is FREE?
I've been using it for years with Tiger and it works flawlessly. No "floating palette" thingy. No problem --- at least not for me. IF all you need is simply something to keep your computer from going to sleep and want "one click" activation/deactivation and do *not* want to spend $9.50, Caffeine is a *solid* option.
Just checked the site. Version 1.1 is for Leopard. 1.0.4 is for Tiger. Both are small (less than 300k) files to download. It just works.
