Moodle ReviewOne of the best! - Version: 1.7.1, 1/19/2007 02:40PM PST

Moodle is an incredibly well done and well supported product. It came in at the top among our choices which included both commercial and open-source offerings.

Installation is straight-forward. You must be server-savvy.

The administrative, instructor and student interfaces are very clean and relatively clear so no additional documentation or training is required.

Excellent set of additional customizations (activities, modules) provided at no cost by 3rd parties. Note that the basic moodle distribution is so complete that these are not necessary, merely extensions of value.

Upgrading from one version to another is easy, but any customizations must be dealt with as you'd expect with this kind of system and architecture.

Moodle ReviewStable and Innovative - Version: 1.6, 6/20/2006 01:12AM PST

I have used Moodle for four years now, and have tested version 1.6 in my classes enough to say that it is stable and ready for production sites. Bug-testing is thorough and fixing is fast. What I like best about this open source program is the user community. It supports innovation and contributions from teachers and developers all over the world. It has been adopted by the largest university in the world (Open Univ. UK--over 150,000 students) and yet is easy enough for a single teacher to set up with a couple clicks on a hosting service using Fantastico. I am now working with six other universities to make new modules--Project Module, Feedback Module, Mobile Phone Modules and other contributions. Imagine the next version, 1.7, which will begin repositories for teachers to share materials.

This is fantastic software. Uploaded onto my server and created a page in a few hours. I am impressed with the results, I just hope the students are as impressed :-)

Three years ago, I first used Moodle as a teacher of English to students who understood no English--they loved Moodle. With no programming experience, it was simple to set up my own server using the excellent installation documentation. Questions were answered on the free service forums in hours, not days. Although I use it for smoothly for 150 simultaneous students, Moodle is scalable to over 30,000 learners. In version 1.5, you will find a much improved quiz module, faster chat, customizable themes, more standards-compliancy, instant messaging, flexible blocks--all in 60+ languages. It is so easy to expand, I have 5 student programmers making a new module at my school for handling projects. Because it is open source, this module will be freely available to all schools along with Moodle which will always be free. The best part is the interface, which is intuitive for teachers and fun for students. All user comparison studies point to Moodle as superior to Blackboard and WebCT, except in price.

To answer the previus poster, "enrol" is perfectly correct English spelling. If you want US spelling ("enroll") then simply specify your default language in Moodle to be en_us instead of "en". :-)

My University dropped over $30K on the last version of WebCT -- a product with less features that Moodle. After just a week, I was up and running with my online course supplements (including time to get a grasp on PHP and MySQL). So far, I've only seen one problem - and inability to properly spell 'enroll.'

Oh, and Moodle works just fine with WebSTAR V/

Moodle ReviewPortable, Open source Course Management Software - Version: 1.3b1, 5/15/2004 03:15AM PST

I have used Moodle for two years now, managing 20 courses, most of them face-to-face university classes with Moodle as an online supplement and web portal. The results have been outstanding--increased interest in subjects, greater participation via discussion boards, journals and chats, and ease of administration for me and other teachers. The pace of updates and new features is incredibly fast, with a new calendar module, RSS feeds, groups, and customizable blocks the most recent ones. Unlimited theme customization, XML, unicode, and international interoperable standards coming in next major upgrade. With over 40 languages, you should have no problem quickly setting this up in any locale. The most invigorating aspect of Moodle is the energetic user/developer community, which engages in both pedagogical discussions and instant feedback for troubleshooting. The main developer team take a collaborative, constructivist approach to education with the learner at the centre. Highly recommended for both an individual teacher setting this up on your own server, as well as 30,000 student campus LMSs. Note: for quick installation, get a hosting provider with Fantastico--Moodle installation takes five minutes.
