Product Description:

Moodle is a learning management system for producing Internet-based course web sites. It is written in PHP and is easy to install and use on Mac OS X (as well as Windows, Unix, Linux and Netware). It has been designed to support modern pedagogies based on social constructionist theory, and includes activity modules such as forums, resources, journals, quizzes, surveys, choices, glossaries, lessons and assignments. It has been translated into over 35 languages, with more on the way. Moodle offers a free alternative to commercial courseware such as WebCT and Blackboard, and is being used by a growing number of universities, schools, and independent teachers for distance education or to supplement face-to-face teaching.

Moodle is an incredibly well done and well supported product. It came in at the top among our choices which included both commercial and open-source offerings.

Installation is straight-forward. You must be server-savvy.

The administrative, instructor and student interfaces are very clean and relatively clear so no additional documentation or training is required.

Excellent set of additional customizations (activities, modules) provided at no cost by 3rd parties. Note that the basic moodle distribution is so complete that these are not necessary, merely extensions of value.

Upgrading from one version to another is easy, but any customizations must be dealt with as you'd expect with this kind of system and architecture.
