Mah Jong Solitaire 1 CommentaryAlert! #2 is even better! - Version: 2.50, 6/25/2004 03:14PM PST

Wait a minute! Many of you may not realize this but this is actually the FIRST version of this game. The SAME people now have the sequel to it! Mah Jong Solitaire 2! That is NOT a version number. It is 2, as in the NEXT generation of this terrific program! But it's confusing when you see that this generation is version 2.5 and the number is tacked right after the title! So heads up! If you want even BETTER graphics, even 3D graphics, SUPERIOR tiles, better gaming, etc., then check out Mah Jong Solitaire 2!! NOT "version" 2.x" as this reads. You can find 2 here on VersionTracker as well. I HOPE that this clears this up!! :)

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 ReviewSweet and Good to Look At! A Bargain, Too. - Version: 2.25, 2/8/2004 08:42PM PST

I've tried them all, and this is my favorite Mac OS X mahjonng game. It's gorgeous --- great tile sets. Would probably like more detailed "per layout" statistics, but perhaps the author will add those at some later date.

Meanwhile, a lot of fun for the money!

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 ReviewA good game - Version: 2.25, 12/6/2003 10:13AM PST

Regardless of whether this is real Mahjong - I have to say that it is very well implemented with some very nice backgrounds and tile graphics. As a previous comment noted, it is *very* similar to Burning Monkey Mahjong, but cheaper.

And I like the tile matching :-)

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 ReviewAnother developer showws their ignorance - Version: 2.25, 11/27/2003 02:04AM PST

Yet another developer determines to not find out about the game before releasing an app

This manifestation goes back to around 1983 when the first /mahjonng/ game game out. The difference was that the original author in his readme file mentioned that he never played the real mahjongg as a child but played a kind of matching game upon which his program was based.

since then dozens of ignorant developers have replicated his game --- not that any of them have not produced a game that many people enjoy --- i just wished they did not advertise their ignorance

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 CommentaryRandomize the music - Version: 2.23, 11/22/2003 08:47AM PST

I do enjoy this game; it's well done and it's relaxing. One suggestion is to allow randomizing the music as you allow randomizing the background and the tilesets. I like the Enigma Variations (which happens to come up first for me), but it *always* comes up first for me.

Also, I am still curious about the relationship between this game and burning Monkey Mah Jong, which shares the code engine.

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 CommentaryNicely done basic matching version - Version: 2.15, 10/16/2003 09:03PM PST

momcat--2008
I like this version, but have used it on a 12" laptop. The tiles, sized to fit, sit at the bottom of the screen where my dock resides. Wish I could edge it up a little (there's room at the top).

Playing on battery draws the battery down quickly and the battery bar on the top menu doesn't show. It would be nice to have a low demand setting (that would, with a click, turn off music and sound effects, leave the background plain and anything else unneeded). And show battery percentage.

One other thing - implement the keyboard shortcut command w to close the high scores window.

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 CommentaryMatching == Shanghai - Version: 2.15, 10/11/2003 09:56PM PST

Shanghai is NOT "real" Mah Jong, even if played with "real" Mah Jong tiles.

Real Mah Jong is a very different, four-player, Gin-Rummy-like game.

As a previous poster noted "real" Mah Jong for the Mac is as yet still only available as an OS 9 game from Aspyr, under the title 'Mah Jong Parlour', which is indeed a solitaire game played against 3 computer opponents.

There is a Java program called Smart Mahjong 2.0 that implements the actual game of Mah Jong. I think it's available through VersionTracker. I can't comment on the game play, as the real game is entirely different from Shanghai and its descendants (as you know). But it exists.

for a real game of Mah Jong that is OS X native. How many match'em'up games do we need? C'mon programmers, show us some skill and program something with some AI. There's several Mah Jong games out there for the PC, and only 1 for the Mac (in Classic.) The matching tile thing has been done to death.

Mah Jong Solitaire 1 CommentaryTwo versions of the same game? - Version: 2.15, 10/10/2003 02:37PM PST

What is the relationship between this game and Burning Monkey Mahjong? I have paid for this one, but checked out the other. It has the same overall design, less the monkeys, right down to some of the same classical music selections. Both were coded by H. Allen. This is $10; the freeverse game is $20.

What's the scoop?
