Apple X11 Commentaryno pressure sensitivity - Version: 1.1.2, 11/2/2006 12:17AM PST

Four years on, Apple's iteration of X11 STILL doesn't support pressure sensitivity for drawing tablets like the wacom series, meaning that terrific FREE drawing/painting apps like "the gimp" and "inkscape" are about as usefull as an etch-a-sketch on the mac!

Apple X11 ReviewFinally, I can get rid of my SGIs! - Version: 1.1.2, 11/1/2006 07:20PM PST

This is the final missing piece for making OS X a serious scientific workstation. At last I can get rid of my SGIs. ($12K apiece 9 years ago).

This is an excellent example of Apple listening to the needs of its customers and doing the Right Thing.

Apple X11 Usage TipNot everyone will need this - Version: 1.1.2, 11/1/2006 02:44PM PST

X11 is an optional install. Where people are not seeing it in Software Update, that's probably because you don't have it installed.

If you don't know what X11 is, then you almost certainly don't need or want it!

Apple X11 Troubleshooting ReportTigerDVD has newer X11 v1.1 (XFree86 4.4.0) not avail at apple.com - Version: 1.0, 6/15/2005 01:21PM PST

On my osX10.4.1 box, the tiger dvd installed a X11 v1.1 which works ok.

The download link, as of June 15, 2005 is for an older v1.0 of X11.
This older version X11 v1.0 might be ok for 10.2 (jaguar) and 10.3 (panther), BUT if you have Tiger (that is, if about this mac says you have osX10.4.x), then you may be better off installing X11 using the (tiger) DVD(s) that came with it.

Specifically, the X11 v1.1 on my DVD is newer than the 1.0 at: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/

And, it is strange that the website is behind the tiger media... I would have hoped that the apple website would have as-newer or newer versions of the free software on the media, but not in this case!

Apple X11 ReviewXFree86 4.5.0 - Version: 1.0, 5/4/2005 06:13PM PST

Just an FYI, but XFree86 4.5.0 is available for compilation via Fink (unstable tree). Obviously, you don't get all the features of Apple's X11, but for some, XFree86 may work better with the specific apps they're running.
