I have been using this for a long time almost every day. Great interface. Very stable and reliable. Fast and looks great.

Colloquy really looks like an OS X application, but I am a bit confused by the interface. When notices come up they appear outside the application - as bubbles at the side of the screen - and the text in them (which is usually truncated) is not selectable. When you click on a bubble it closes, and the notices below it do not move up, so you wind up with an unknown number of bubbles that have opened below the screen's bottom edge.
I will have to look at the ReadMe (shock! horror!) to see if there's a way to have those appear in the main window or in a secondary window so I can copy & paste their texts as my ad-hoc typing is atrocious.

I love this program, is it still being actively developed?
Application will not run - Version: 2.1 (3720), 10/10/2007 04:50PM PST
TMOA
Upon attempting to start the application, it will temporarily appear in the dock and then vanish as the application will not start. Restarted the computer after downloading, and ensured program was located in the applications folder prior to next attempt. Nothing changed, application would not successfully start.

Seems OK, scripts are confusing

I DL'd this today to join an IRC channel my son helps run. He had no idea how to us eit, so I was on my own.
Opened it up and right away knew what I needed to enter and where. I was in the channel in a few minutes. What I found was it was not setup fto use scripts and I had to 1 find them, and 2 figure out how to install/use them.
Some I grabbed are Itunes, Weather, and sysinfo. iTunes works great, but does not auto enter the song that is playing. You have to type /itunes each time. Weather asked me the first time what my zip was, but did not ever show the weather when I typed /weather. Sysinfo will not bring up prefs, but at least does show the commands it supports, only if you know them. A trip to Script Editor showed me the commands and I copied a few down I wanted to use.
All in all a good, seemingly solid IRC client. Never quit, no one complained about my messages or the format they were coming in and the only complaint I have is the scripts... they need some serious attention.

Scripting support stagnant

This was promising about two years ago. Since then, support for AppleScript (and other scripting languages) has deteriorated and stagnated to the point where even their own plugins don't work.
The developers seem more interested in supporting Apple's latest greatest platform (currently the iPhone) than getting it working properly on the Mac's that people have already bought.
It's difficult to see how spending time on iPhone support is going to fix long-standing bugs on the Mac version.
I'm back with Snak. When it comes to IRC on the Mac, you get what you pay for, apparently.

After testing a good percentage of the other decrepid irc clients finallly this one actually works with SSL its a miracle :P
How tragic that basic features that are stock in mirc32 seem to be a challenge
for any other OS it would seem.
Timestamping and other such features would be nice.
And yes that baloon thingo is about as usefull as maralinga.
At least this mob are on the right track. Lots of work to be done but a dam
good start.
Also for the benefit of irc users everywhere can programmers/coders please please make it easier or in some cases possible to delete server lists
with a select and hold shift routine.
Or a novel idea make it optional or at the very least a nice easy txt file
because some of us don't want server lists how many km's long with servers that will never get visited.
Hmm theres no option to delete the servers folder in this version you can delete the idividual irc server details but not its original folder.
I'm sure theres more i could pick on but because this one actually connected to an ssl irc server with no BS thats a big improvement on the rest of the so called "competition" which in essence there is none because half of them
have no idea for inspiration i do suggest they take a look at mirc32
just so they have something to work by as a rough guide of what features
we would want.
As for paying money for these things no way not till they're upto spec
as currentlly NONE i've used are worthy.
If anyone knows of better GUI type clients for irc please do mention them
here as the mac community is in peril when choosing such software.
No wonder it's all gone intel it's our only hope in some cases of being able to use decent software on our machines in some cases :P

Sure, it's got a great interface, but in my experience it's incredibly buggy and confusing. Why is it that all the notices that I get from PMs from bots and whatnot come up as growl bubbles and not as chat text in the chat window? The bubbles cut off a large portion of the message and poorly format it so I have no idea what they're saying.
Give me the old version back

Unfortunately I deleted the old version and now 2.1 is randomly crashing in the the middle of a chat. I can't pinpoint what the deal is, I've tried simly letting it sit without saying anything, and it still crashes. The longest it has gone without crashing is 22 minutes, the shortest is 7 minutes or so.
I've been going back to Snak and I'm finding I can easily live without Colloquys eye candy. Snak is like a rock solid old faithful, where Colloquy is a mixed bag. You never know what youre gonna get with any particular release.
And, why isn't there a plain list of everything that has changed since last version ? That might help me look for things that could cause these crashes.

Best IRC client for OS X by FAR.

I have been using this for a while and have to say it's the most easy-to-use, functional, attractive irc client available for OS X (I tried a bunch of them before finding this one).
No significant problems with version 2.1 for me.
