Mencoder OSX CommentaryPathetically slow on dvd - Version: 0.7.7, 12/13/2004 06:51PM PST

Well, I use mencoder in Linux and in OSX so I can compare; on the same dvd on an iMac G5 1.8gHz I get a mere 10 fps encoding from dvd.
Exactly the same command line on a Toshiba Satellite P4 2.4 gHz gives me 35 fps.... uhm, and I believed the bs about the ghz of the G5 being worth more! In fact I can confirm (also checking with md5sum's, maple etc..) that a single G5 at 1.8 ghz is about half or a third the speed of a P4 2.4ghz. Sorry for the bad news!
A good news is that for anything else (OS related) my iMac is far superior to a PC-based OS. Ah, if only OSX would be released for PC's!!!

Also note (a bug?) encoding from dvd is MUCH slower (about half speed) than encoding from hd (I mean I first copy on hd the content of the ts folder and then encode). I can't say if it the dvd's fault or mencoder, or OSX.

this program used to work great. now, everytime i try to rip something, i outputs as the last couple of lines:

videocodec: libavcodec (720x480 fourcc=58564944 [XVID])
get_buffer() failed (0 -192233 0 0x2981f10)
Bus error

anyone have any clues as to what's going on? the avi won't even open. and when i try to rebuild the index, i get just the audio. please help!!

Mencoder OSX ReviewToo many problems - Version: 0.7.7, 1/1/2004 03:55PM PST

Seems to lack the stability and superior quality of MPlayer. My Audio disjoints from the video on certain DVD rips, despite the settings. Still, it gets the job done a portion of the time. Thanks for all the work you've done.

I'm japanese and latinamerican movie fan but can't apply japanese or spanish audio (when option exist) to my converted movies. And spanish subtitles option doesn't exist.
Must fix it thinking worldwide consumer preferences, options, targets...

Mencoder OSX ReviewNice try, but - Version: 0.7.7, 10/17/2003 07:56AM PST

lohengrin2
totally useless.

Reading /Users/*****/.mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/Users/*****/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Reading /usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf: this codecs.conf is too old, incompatible with this mplayer release! at line 6
Using built-in default codecs.conf
File not found: 'frameno.avi'
Failed to open frameno.avi
...
No audio encoder (-oac) selected. Select one or use -nosound. Use -oac help!
Exiting...

...and so on. So how to rate an app which does not do what it says? Switching to D-Vision...

Mencoder OSX ReviewAudio Encoder problems - Version: 0.7.7, 9/17/2003 01:00PM PST

Mencoder does a great job when it does work but I often get an error message that says "No audio encoder (-oac) selected. Select one or use -nosound. Use -oac help!" even though I have MP3 selected. I still get the message if I try nosound. I ususally just fiddle with the program til it works. I give a big extra star to this program because it's the only one I have found so far that can convert my EyeTV recorded movies into something smaller while still keeping the sound. =)

Mencoder OSX ReviewDecent - Version: 0.7.7, 7/17/2003 12:28PM PST

Interface is yucky. Output quality is good (tried divx4 with mp3 audio on the flick "L.A. Confidential".

I'd like to see DivX5 as an option as well as Ogg audio...

Mencoder OSX ReviewVery good program! - Version: 0.7.6, 5/31/2003 01:33AM PST

I use this software before I go to the dorm at my school, to rip my DVDs so the discs themselves don't get stolen (after a bad experience last year). It's quite good, once you figure out how to use it. The interface is cluttered, so I would suggest widening the window a little bit. Give yourself some room! Anyhow, one question: Is there a way to encode to DivX 5.0.5, provided you have the Codec already installed?

Mencoder OSX ReviewIt owns. Sorta. - Version: 0.7.6, 5/30/2003 09:17PM PST

DocGawnz
The GUI definetly needs a lot of work, but commandline mencoder in general owns. A few tips... unless you're using filters, you can leave off -vop filters. If you're noticing that your MP3 bitrate is a LOT higher than you set it, change "br=128" to "preset=128". "br=" does nothing when mencoder defaults to VBR (which it does). If you're not satisfied with how the GUI version works, do consider the commandline version... it's really much better.
