Product Description:

ComStats lets you chart your usage of Apple's Mail.app email client, the iChat and Adium AIM clients, and the open-source Fire IM client.

All these applications can keep copies of your communications on your hard drive. ComStats reads these logs and graphs some data using the JFreeChart graphing utility. Over arbitrary periods of time (days, months, or years), you can chart data such as:

  • the number of emails and chats you have
  • the size of emails and the duration of chats
  • the amount of emoticons you use in your mails and chats
  • the amount of links you send in your mails and chats

What's new in this version:

  • fixed huge problem reading POP mailboxes, they should work now
  • added preference to view different types of graphs (bar graph or line graph)
  • added version compatability notes in the preferences
  • put the graph back in an image well
  • cleaned up some code

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

ComStats Troubleshooting ReportWeird Problem - Version: 1.1.1, 10/30/2004 05:59PM PST

WiFiRules
Maybe my iChat is just weird, but it saves my logs to:
~/Documents/iChats/

With titles in the format of:
Anna Johnson on 2004-04-10 at 08:20

ComStats reads every chat log title as an individual person, as in:
Anna Johnson on 2004-04-10 at 08:20 and Anna Johnson on 2004-03-12 at 07:12 are different people.

This makes graphing impossible.

I was able to get the email portion to work by fiddling with the preferences. When the "count 'deleted messages' mailboxes" was checked I received an error. As long as that is unchecked it worked. Try it.

Conceptually I am high on this product. Unfortunately I can not make it deliver on the promise. I very much miss this feature (had it in Eudora Pro) since I began using Apple's Mail. I am using Mail v1.2.5 (docs referred to 1.2.3). Three stars for the concept and a hopefully bright future, not higher because implementation is still in progress.

A diamond in the rough, keep your eyes on this one.
