I'm not getting any readings from iStumbler now that I've upgraded to Snow Leopard. Is it just me?

iStumbler Troubleshooting Reportcan't see closed networks? - Version: 98, 4/4/2009 12:36AM PST

plaintiger
my SSID isn't broadcast; when i choose "Join Other..." i'm given a field into which i can enter the name of my network, but the "encryption" popup and the password field and so forth remain grayed out and unusable, so i can't join my network to monitor it. clicking OK despite not having been allowed to specify my encryption type and password has only the ever-so-lovely effect of killing my network connection. and in the user-hostile tradition of so much open-source software, there is NO documentation that will explain the predicament. there are even icons missing from the title bar of the Preferences window.

my initial impression is that this software is useless. it's certainly useless for people who want to monitor closed networks. why offer a "Join Other..." option if it doesn't work?

i *may* un-close my network long enough to use this lame-ass piece of software to get some stats, but you can bet i'm not going to do that every time i want to know what's going on with my network.

iStumbler ReviewRuns on Leopard without issue - Version: 98, 1/16/2009 06:20PM PST

There are posts here that puzzle me. Perhaps Apple's later releases fixed early issue? With 10.5.6 on a PPC machine, v98 runs without issue. Uses between 2.2 and 5% of the CPU. Uses a chunk of VM (700Mb) and a very small real RAM footprint. No problems noted.

iStumbler CommentarySeveral problems - any resolution? - Version: 98, 5/21/2008 07:15PM PST

Will this app ever be updated to remove the Console spam it is currently generating?

Upon every launch, for the entire time the application is active, system.log (& others?) are constantly bombarded with messages such as:

---
5/21/08 7:06:20 PM iStumbler[25312] WARNING: deviceInquiryComplete with error: 188
5/21/08 7:06:24 PM iStumbler[25312] exception getting radio info: XML parser error:

5/21/08 7:06:34 PM iStumbler[25312] exception getting radio info: XML parser error:
Unexpected character a at line 1
Old-style plist parser error:
Unexpected ';' or '=' after key at line 1
---
…at LEAST once every 5 seconds, for as long as the application is active.

I like this app, but cannot afford to have it constantly filling my log with such messages, so refuse to use it. Is a fix planned?

i'm on my mbp, CD 2.0, with 802.11n broadcom 4321 upgrade kit card...

Works, but increases my laptop's temperature by almost 20 C to almost 70 C. Quit the app, and within 5 minutes I'm back to 45 C - 50 C.

iStumbler ReviewNice app, a little rough around the edges. - Version: 98, 3/31/2007 06:33AM PST

1. Some accesspoints for no reason come up as "-1mhz", and are seen on channel 0.

2. Why are the frequencies of accesspoints measured in mhz anyway. Channels are there for a reason. I know 2412MHZ sounds slgihtly more advanced, but for an app that is supposed to be simple, it's counter-intuitive. "Channel 1" is much simpler.

3. The frequency of 802.11a accesspoints is completely messed up. Intel Macs can detect 802.11a.

4. Why is it impossible to monitor more than one network at once? The app is operating in active mode.

5. There's a lot of holes in the MAC address table.

6. Why do Bluetooth devices, when found, report "17MHZ" as their frequency in the Growl popup?

7. The inspector for Bluetooth devices is horribly broken for devices where the name hasn't been gathered yet.

8. In preferences, why are there very low-res icons for the AirPort and Bluetooth tabs?

9. Why is it detecting several non-existant airport base stations with a BSSID of all zeros? Kismac, Macstumbler and the airport commandline tool are all not finding them, and they're not in the airport menu?

Apart from these, it's a nice app. Keep up the good work.

iStumbler ReviewDoes just what I want - Version: 98, 2/10/2007 11:30AM PST

reagan9000
I needed something to find hotspots whilst I travel so I found (thanks to an earlier user review of MacStumbler, which does not work on Intel Macs) iStumbler. It does just what I want, finds way more hotspots than the standard wifi menu control, tells me at a glance if the hotspot is open, and tells me what services and ports each host supports. Certainly worth the $20 suggested donationware.
