Broken special characters

I use SPSS on Macs since version 10. When sharing files on OS X and Windows, special characters change because of some charset problem. This affects the label text, so it's just an annoyance. Now I've updated to SPSS 16 and the broken umlauts greet me on the splash screen too. This software isn't made with much attention to detail.
Intel compatibility fixed in v.16 - Version: 16.0, 11/18/2007 07:52AM PST
insecure
SPSS now runs natively (and, according to them, correctly) on Intel and PowerPC macs both. It's also been completely rewritten, and many of its more bizarre idiosyncracies are remedied. I'd recommend v.16.

The SPSS website has stated that running SPSS under Rosetta (i.e. on Intel Macs) will give inaccurate results.
Intel Macs not Supported. - Version: 13.0, 9/26/2006 12:47PM PST

Come on! This is not a universal binary and SPSS won't work with Rosetta. So NO intel Macs. Can someone recommend a stats program for the mac because I'm done with SPSS?

Not for Intel Macs... but Stata is. - Version: 11.0.4, 9/22/2006 03:37PM PST

Well now, SPSS will not run on Intel macs. Guess they never sent any programers to the WWDC.
Stata had it working 10 days after Steve intro the new boxes...
On January 10, Apple Computer announced the availability of its new Intel-based Macintosh computers, MacBook and iMac. Concurrently, we would like to announce the availability of Stata for Intel Macintosh: Small Stata, Intercooled Stata, and Stata/SE.
Stata for Intel Macintosh has been completely adapted and recompiled for Intel hardware, meaning that it will run at full speed on the Intel processor and does not rely on any emulation. Our informal timings show that Apple's new Intel-based platforms run Stata substantially faster than did the previous generation of Macintoshes.
There is no extra cost for Stata for Intel Macintosh. In fact, the same license may be used on Intel and PowerPC computers.
Current users will be able to obtain Stata for Intel Macintosh with any Stata executable update after Thursday, January 19, 2006. Install your existing Stata for Macintosh—it will run automatically in emulation mode—and then type update all. The updated application is a "universal binary", meaning that it is made to run at peak performance on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macintosh computers.
New users can order Stata for Intel Macintosh online now for immediate shipment (from http://www.stata.com/news/intel_mac.html)
Who do you think really supports the Mac platform?

Fellow SPSS users...I was just told by an SPSS employee that "There is a newer Mac version of SPSS which should be out in the latter half of this year, but I don't have a firm date for that." My guess would be sometime in November or December, but at least a new version is in the works.

This version works great with Tiger, but the Help menu does not function with Panther. Does anyone know of a work around or will I need to downgrade?
Thanks,
Melanie
