Product Description:

Snail Mail is an envelope addressing and printing application which interacts directly with the Address Book database in Mac OS X 10.3 or higher. Its primary function is to quickly address and print single or multiple envelopes based on entries in the Mac OS X Address Book database, but it also allows ad-hoc manual entry of addresses directly onto the envelope. Batches of envelopes can be based on Address Book groups, or ad-hoc lists selections of addresses. Snail Mail can print barcodes for more efficient mail handling.

Snail Mail provides for different default text attributes (font, colour, etc) for different parts of the address.

There are already several envelope applications available for Mac OS X, but I wrote this one when I found that none suited my needs.

Macworld (USA edition) reviewed Snail Mail as one of the 75 best low-cost programs for the Mac and gave it a 4 mouse rating. On the same page, in a review of a competing product MacWorld says, "If you have a large mailing list, use Snail Mail ... instead".
(MacWorld, May 2003, page 73)

Other barcode formats can be added to future versions - users need to supply detailed information on how the barcode is to be calculated and formatted, and if any information other than the address itself is required, then access to that information will need to be provided (eg, Australia Post requires a $30,000 subscription to their database, which is beyond the scope of this freeware/underware application)

NB: This version of Snail Mail is for Mac OS X 10.3 and above only. An older Mac OS X 10.2.x compatible version is also available at http://nixanz.com/products/snailmail/SnailMail048.sit

What's new in this version:

  • Settings now change correctly when the envelope profile is changed (ie, text attributes, field hiding, prefix/suffix and envelope background text/graphics, paper size and margins are all configured on a per-profile basis).
  • Changed command names "Envelope Page Setup" to "Page Setup" and changed "Envelope Setup" to "Profile" in the UI to avoid confusion.
  • Fixed a problem with deleting the currently active profile.
  • Fixed problem with some preferences (eg, field hiding) being ignored in German localisation.
  • Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

    • Mac OS X 10.3

    Additional Requirements:

    • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

I wonder if the Tiger 10.4 version was accidentally put out on the web for download? Prior versions of this program have been excellent.
