SharingMenu CommentaryThis is a great little essential! - Version: 1.3, 6/9/2006 07:25PM PST

AFAIK. the only one of it's kind, and I hope the developer will update it. Been a little shaky for a while now.

But what a huge freakin' gap left by Apple ... Of course there needs to be a menu extra to control firewall and sharing; this is essential, logical ... and Apple's oversight here makes about as much sense as hiding the keychain menu extra as a Keychain Access application preference, duh.

Very good idea. I suggest adding some menu items, like internet sharing and print sharing.

I, too, started finding that SharingMenu crashed on startup- so I wrote Mani, the developer, and sent along my crash log. Here is his response:
"I don't know exactly why this happens, but for some people SharingMenu does not work in certain paths. Maybe the access privileges to these paths are not sufficient. Please try to install SharingMenu directly in /Applications. And you could try to repair the permissions on your volume with Disk Utility.
SharingMenu is working fine on mine and many other Macs."
(I had installed the app in the Utilities folder)
Here is what i did:
I removed the app from my Startup Items, moved the app from my utilities folder into /Applications, ran the cron tasks and repaired permissions, then re-booted. All is fine now- it's even back in my Startup Items.
Maybe this will help someone. I would like to note that for a developer to respond so quickly (same day!) to a help request for a *free* application is above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks, Mani!
As I noted below, this is one of those wonderful little apps that make life with my Powerbook so much better...five stars!
