WWII Online ReviewOnce You Pop You Can't Stop - Version: 1.17.4, 11/25/2004 09:17AM PST

Although there is a steep learning curve, this game becomes very addicting. It does press my PowerMac 1.25 SP G4 with 64 MB vRAM 1.25 GB RAM but I can get 30 frames per second in open battles, and in close battles get about 10 (with 64+ players in the imediate area). So I pick my fights. The game is under constant upgrade. Like in 1.17.4 we just got the Sherman tank, and 1.17.3 gave us the Panzer 4G. The developers (20 people) do an awesome job depicting real-life models of the tanks, vehicles, aircraft, boats, and weapons of wwii and are constanly working on bringing new areas (North Africa soon) to play, and new weapons to use, and new ways to play.

WWII Online ReviewTerrible support & needs better than my g4 2x1ghz - Version: 1.16.3, 10/15/2004 03:15PM PST

I've got a G4 dual 1Ghz with 1G RAM and this game barely played. I also had a ticket open due to install issues that I solved myself after 3 days without the ticket ever being answered, it's still open! I was told by other players that the support tickets are not answered - that is utterly unforgivable considering they've taken my cash.

I'm prepared to believe that if you have a top end G5 with the best graphics card the game may be smooth, but I would advise everyone not to waste their time and money until something changes, play warbirds or something instead.

This game has great potential, but is suffering from either lack of commitment to the Mac platform, or else total underinvestment. Can I have my moeny back :) I doubt it, not worth posting a ticket about anyway.

WWII Online Reviewgood stuff - Version: 1.16.3, 9/29/2004 10:03PM PST

This is the most engrossing, disbelief-suspending games i've ever played. Hearing the Blens bombs come whistling in, the 40mm auto cannons pasting a building, your buddies running by... watching tracers and tank rounds and smoking aircraft and turrets blowing off of tanks... woo!

I can't comment on how it plays on anything but a G5, but it plays smoothly on mine as one would expect.

I've played every night a couple of hours over the past 2 weeks and have had no crashes, no need to relog or reboot, seems like pretty solid work from CRS to me. I was involved in the beta 3 years ago, too buggy then, they have me now though.

WWII Online ReviewDevelopers that listen? WTF? - Version: 1.16.3, 9/29/2004 08:14PM PST

This is an absurd comment. The WWII Online developers (Cornered Rat) are notorious for having the worst support, and not listening to users at all. THEY DON'T EVEN READ the "support tickets" that are supposed to provide user help.

The game is a great concept - I have been playing it for over 3 years. However, I recently had to unsubscribe on principal. The devlopers don't know what they are doing, and have no respect for Mac users.

This could be (and has been) an awesome game if they developed it properly - they should focus on performance (framerate) and compatibility issues - not adding more Special FX and vehicles that cause even worse bugs and performance.

For me, this game was MUCH more playable in the older versions. It used to run acceptably on almost any hardware. Today you need a G5 just to compete with PC players. No other Mac game has so many issues compared to the PC version. I'd rather be downgraded to an older, simpler version, where anybody could have fun - than get involved in this expensive, PC-like race for the fastest video cards, etc.

The game doesn't even support AltiVec acceleration or Multiple Processors! This is criminal for such a bandwidth-intensive game.

Full marks for realism and a massive gameworld - negative marks for playability, development and support. CRS could be making HUGE money if they support the Mac properly. Apple users put their money where their mouth is to a degrees that PC users never have. But CRS can't see this. They could have the NUMBER ONE GAME ON MAC with a large number of subscribers, if they addressed these issues.

Instead, they think the Mac market is not profitable, because Mac users are dropping out of the game like flies. But they don't realize that this is just because their Mac product sucks, and Mac users have higher standards than PC users.

What they have said, is that WHEN more Mac users subscribe, they will put more effort into Mac development. This is bass ackwards - it's not how the market works. WHEN they make a proper Mac version, Mac users will flock to WWII Online.

We just can't trust your promises of "If you re-subscribe, we will make it better" - SHOW US THE PRODUCT FIRST and then we will SHOW YOU THE MONEY. Sorry CRS, I love your ideas, but I can't trust you as far as I could spit you. You have to earn our trust, not the other way around. As a mark of support - I once subscribed for months while I wasn't able to play. Had enough of spending money for nothing.

One other time, I had no choice but to not play for a month (when I wanted to) because of one of their broken updates. But I still had to pay. No refund, no discount, no nothing for my interminable downtime away from my squad buddies and ANZACs.

WWII Online ReviewFun game and always getting better... - Version: 1.16.2, 9/16/2004 11:52AM PST

This is a great WWII era game that allows one to participate in large battles with land forces (infantry, armor, trucks, anti-aircraft, etc.), air forces (fighters, bombers, etc.), and naval forces (river boats, destroyers, transports, etc.) controlled by 100s to 1000s of online players in a large theater of battle. You can even have multiple people control or ride a vehicle (e.g. bombers with pilot and tail gunner, tanks with driver and gunner, tanks/inf riding on transports for naval invasions, etc.).

The game is updated every few months with new features and bug fixes (yeah they have a few problems here and there).

WWII Online Usage TipFor those having issue with an update download cycle... - Version: 1.14.1, 9/16/2004 11:27AM PST

shawnce
If you attempt to launch the game and it proceeds to download an update you already have or the full installer when it shouldn't be abort that download and proceed to launch the game offline (double the World War ][ Online application). This should get your current installed version registered correctly with the OS and allow the correct update process to take place.

You will likely have to do this after every update install until such time as the issue is corrected in the PlayNet downloader or Mac OS X (this issue showed up after a security update for Mac OS X that changed how Launcher Services deals with applications that users haven't yet run).

WWII Online CommentaryYep. - Version: 1.14.1, 6/17/2004 07:13PM PST

Something is definitely effed up. The server just keeps downloading the 'update', which has all the look of a complete game (re)installation. Following that is a vicious cycle of (re)installing the same patch over and over. No word of this problem on the game site either that I could see. Now what do I do with an entire evening of no wwiionline?

WWII Online CommentaryLooks like they've b0rked this update. - Version: 1.14.1, 6/17/2004 02:14PM PST

The servers report that it needs updating, despite having downloaded the update - maybe the servers are at fault - either way, it's not allowing to connect.

WWII Online Commentary1.14 to be released next week WITH free trial - Version: 1.13.0, 5/22/2004 11:20AM PST

Next week (May 24th - 27th) 1.14 should be released. There will be a free trial available soon after release (if all goes smoothly). It is very likely the free trial will start Friday, May 28th. They usually start the free trials on a Friday.

To look for free trial information, go to www.wwiionline.com In the menu, select "Getting Started" and then "Free Trial". Right now it will say the free trial is over, but when the new free trial starts, you should be able to find information there.

See you on the battlefield.
