Works on Panther (10.3.9). Would be more useful if "Dim" were already activated upon launch and if it didn't dim the Desktop when Finder is the frontmost app.
Doesn't work properly

As lmb wrote: one can't switch between application by simply clicking into another app’s window. This makes the app almost useless. The competing app 'FocusLayer' (which is end-of-life, but still can be found via Google) works flawlessly. I wish Apple would built this feature directly into Mac OS X.

While I like the overall idea, on mf computer (running 10.3.5), the dimming pane blocks mouse clicks. This makes it impossible to switch to another window/application using the mouse.
If you must have that functionality, try a similar program called "FocusLayer"...
