Memtest Usage TipHow to legally get memtest without paying for the download - Version: 4.21, 1/6/2008 03:58PM PST

Rember uses memtest at its core. However, Rember isn't able to test any memory that is being eaten by the OS, so, if you want to really test your RAM, you should:

1) install Rember

2) Boot into single-user mode:

hold command-S on boot, then:

/sbin/fsck -fy

/sbin/mount -uw /

3) Once you have the hard drive mounted, run the memtest executable buried in Rember. If you installed Rember to /Applcation/Utilities the path would be:

/Applications/Utilities/Rember.app/Contents/Resources/memtest

It's one thing to charge for the software, but as I understand it, this is open source software that he's modified, so any changes he makes to it are required to me made open source as well. By putting it behind a locked door (i.e. you don't get the source until you pay for it) he's breaking the license, last I checked.

The developer could charge a higher fee, and automatically email the latest revision the way SoftRAID does. That should address his concerns and not be a hassle for users wanting the latest version.
