Excellent, easy to install/use

I have used ProjectForum for a year and a half to run a university research group and micro/nanofabrication facility. I had looked for nearly 2 years for an easy to use, easy to install & maintain, platform agnostic, web-based application to facilitate communication and documentation for a wide variety of projects. We use ProjectForum for everything from running meetings, planning and documenting experiments, logging equipment problems, and collaborating with people in other groups. Moreover, ProjectForum automatically becomes an excellent corporate memory, which is important when you have people moving in and out of a group. New group members have no problem learning to use it. Personally, I think spending 30 minutes with the manual is time well-spent in order to access the full power of ProjectForum. I have shown colleagues how we use the package and in every case they have been astonished at the quantum leap it provides in organizing a group to make it effective.
If you are looking for an easy to use wiki package that is trivial to install and maintain and yet is powerful and full-featured, this is it.

This is for people with more money than time. What really killed it for me is the hosting fees!
If you run your own webserver, you can install MediaWiki for free and have the same superb software used by http://www.wikipedia.com and with EXCELLENT free support via their mailing list.
If you don't want to run a webserver, you can still use MediaWiki for free at http://www.wikicities.com but you'll have a few unobtrusive ads on your site.
The wiki concept takes a while to grok, but it is really powerful once you get going. I'm in the process of converting nearly all my static pages on my website to wiki pages.

started with this app is superb--just copy to /Applications/ and run it. Unfortunately, I find the actual use of ProjectForum confusing and unintuitive. It's a continuous guessing game as to what to do next and how to do it.

a couple hours and learn PHP - there are a lot of really good PHP collaboration utils out if you are willing to spend the time to rtfm.

well, but far to basic and limiting for the price.
It's a very different self-contained proprietary approach to wikis that won't appeal to free/open software hounds who relish hacking the thing into existence. It WILL appeal to folks who just want to get on with finding out what a wiki can do for collaborative efforts. And for what it does, the price is reasonable, particularly if security is not a high priority, as for education.
Of course the real epiphany is a web page that can be edited in place by the viewer. Why no one thought that was important for the first 15 years of the web (except for Ward Cunningham, of course), I cannot imagine. Having brought 5 or 6 project groups into existence in one day and one weekend of fiddling around, I can't imagine having much interest in any other web site creation approach in the future. Good grief! No more color coded html! No more SFTP tools or reloads. Hit save changes, and the page appears. This changes everything in a way comparable to the first text editors!
A few more detailed impressions:
* zero user interface application; everything is done via a browser.
* you may need some help proxying the server so that it works with your existing port 80 web server. Each setup differs enough that general instructions are not quite general.
* site changes are reported with page names (or full contents if security not an issue) in automatic RSS feeds. Monitor activity with an RSS news reader. How cool is that!?
* image and file attachment uploads of course!
* tagging text as a link automatically creates a page of the same name
* supports wikis within wikis that are within the site, each administered separately.
* excellent online help, with hint buttons in critical places, downloadable userguide, and FAQ in depth.
* Online forum and email support are very responsive.
Downsides:
* 508 compliance documentation does not exist yet
* minor problems with different browsers; alignment or graphics.
