tell me your concern with the VISE installer? I use VISE rather than Apple's PackageMaker because Apple's 10.2 installer doesn't work on old OS X systems. After sooloo's comment I changed the distribution so it includes the files separately in case you want to install them yourself. With regard to the install location, I don't know of a better alternative. The only directories on the default path are /bin, /usr/bin, /sbin, and /usr/sbin.

sooloo: ditch the VISE installer. And reconsider using other directories instead of /usr/{bin,share}, which are best off limits to 3rd party utilities like this. I installed it anyway because it looks like what I've been looking for to compliment my firewire backup strategy. No rating 'til I actually test it. :-)

user, I am totally lost when something hangs or goes wrong. However, I also can see the power of this app; it makes me determined to figure out the CLI and how to take advantage of this. I have had my last struggle with Retrospect. I reserve one star b/c, ultimately, it would be great to have a GUI that provided us ignorant sl_ts a small crutch to lean on. Great work.

you have half a brain (and judging by your 'learn AppleScript' comment, I'm not sure about that) you'll be running this via cron, and there are plenty of gui frontends for that. One star off because it comes as an installer... Plz include the executable separately so I can move it myself... I'd really prefer not to run POS InstallerVISE installers unless abs. neccessary.
Fortunately I didn't…

write off this app because of one inane review and rating. CLI is a decent starting point for this actually, and it does exactly what it says. Four plus a freeware bonus star. GUI and CLI would be super nice, so there's plenty of room for improvement, but thanks!

on OS X app because it performs OS X system backups... Unix is what makes OS X so powerfull - I suggest you learn something about it. Double click on the icon named Terminal. ;-) This is a great little app - good work.

about you stop whining, since it's free and all. I like the fact that it backs straight up to CD. Would be nice to have a GUI, which could be a future objective.
some stuff just now (I want to re-partition to make room for the long
overdue YellowDog partition).
I had to realise that OS X doesn't ship with *any* backup facility. The
usual suspects (tar, cpio, pax) are broken since they don't fully support
the native filesystem. The only Apple alternative is to become a "full paying
member" of some online service (.mac). How is that related to a basic
sysadmin tasks??
I'm glad I found this utility, which is *exactly* what I need. Please
don't add a GUI. Firstly, I can't see how it would help, secondly, backup/
restore utilities have to be minimal to be useful for disaster recovery.
One possible future project could be an interactive restore facility,
a la "restore -i", just so I don't have to go through the file list myself.
Cheers
