Ok, the game itself is very well done.
It has a nice modern style and a high pace right from the start.
While controls are simple and effective it takes some training to master the levels which increase in difficulty.
The soundtrack takes some getting used to but is overall appropriately done.
The _really_ big drawback of the entire experience is the game's registration system.
First of all, the license you purchase is for 1(!) Mac and has to be 'activated' online from within the game.
For this purpose, the game creates a 'hardware ID' for your machine which it then transmits to the GarageGames server (the game's distributor).
GarageGames' server checks the license number and registers your Mac's hardware ID with it, making it impossible to register another machine with the same number.
Well, there's nothing wrong with that (although it doesn't feel right, either), BUT: Whenever you re-install your system/re-format or exchange/upgrade your hard drive the game creates a NEW 'hardware ID', so YOUR LICENSE NUMBER WILL NOT WORK ANYMORE, EVEN WHEN YOU TRY TO RE-REGISTER ONLINE!!!
There are plenty of developers out there working with _real_ hardware IDs (e.g. illumineX, KavaSoft, Salling, LagoonSoft etc.), so you can format/upgrade your hard drive all you want and the ID stays the same.
Not with GarageGames!
So basically you get a license for ONE(!) Mac that is good for ONE(!) system installation on ONE(!) hard drive and is VOIDED AFTER A REFORMAT/UPGRADE OF YOUR DRIVE/reinstall of your system.
This is 'fun' when you work with (e.g. Panther) betas etc. and reformat your drive quite frequently.
For this 'feature' alone I cannot recommend this game at all, which is a pity, because the game itself is excellent (when it works).
So I have to give an otherwise cool game 1 star in all categories (you pay for a game and then end up with a demo!), just because some paranoid distributor uses a registration system that is the WORST I have ever encountered!
GarageGames, if you guys read this: PLEASE STOP THIS NONSENSE!

cost a lot and it is a little hard..and the graphics aren't the most beautiful in the world. Still, this game is worth something and it is challenging. Now let's just get rid of that "one hit you're dead" thing, and maybe the powerups should last a little longer.
All the fun is restored and I can wholeheartedly recommend this game now! For anyone with an affinity for true arcade shooters with a retro twist, this baby is an absolute must-buy (remember to buy it from the developers, though!).
