Product Description:

As you play Max Payne you will find yourself moving through the game with a psychological and emotional connection. The innovative bullet time feature slows the pace down to Matrix-like action, allowing you to kill more than one bad guy at a time. You also have a quick save feature, allowing you to save the game where you are, at any time, and resume from there …should you get killed or need to take a break.

The game also uses movie-like cinematics, capturing realistic smoke, blood and particle effects, and edgy drug/dream sequences. You will also find fast cut scenes to keep you involved as well as an excellent use of film techniques. This is a game that truly celebrates the “beauty” in violence…kids need not apply.

Max Payne ReviewGreat Game - Version: 1.0, 5/12/2004 09:43PM PST

This game is just great.

First that bad bits- It's true that it's all shooting, and the few puzzles presented are pretty lame. There are also some levels I found really annoying and headache inducing involving running around on trails of blood through outer-space listening to babies crying. While the environment graphics are good, the people graphics are pretty lame. And the game play is too easy- they won't let you turn the difficulty up until you've finished the entire game, which is really annoying, because I found it much too easy. Also, it crashed a few times while playing, (on a dual G5) but frequent saves meant that not much was lost.

OK, all that said, the game is just incredible. It avoids all the frenetic sprinting around and lack of clarity found in many adrenaline pumping first person shooters. You can't run or turn unrealistically fast. It takes planning and strategy, as well as great control and an itchy trigger finger, to get through this game. The bullet time feature is just great. The gameplay and sets are wonderful. I loved this game, it's one of my all-time favorites.

Max Payne ReviewOakay, but not very fulfilling - Version: 1.0, 11/9/2003 03:44PM PST

The story is interesting, but the game play consists of mostly (90%) shooting. Put as many bullets toward the enemy as possible. I've been unable to find any portion of the game where stealth or planning are rewarded. There are a few puzzles, but they are (to me) mostly annoying and spiteful.
The game has some very nice graphics, but there is very little interaction with the world. You can't pick things up and move them, you can't even close a door/drawer that you've opened.
I much preferred the game play of DeusEx to that of Max Payne. In Deus, you can move objects around to get to other places, or for strategic attacks on the enemy.
The "bullet time" feature of Payne is novel and is a very useful way to take out a larger group of enemies, still.
