RsyncX ReviewJust what I'd been looking for! - Version: 2.0c, 4/15/2004 06:57AM PST

I had been looking for a utility to back up specific folders from one drive to another, and nothing I had found seemed to fit the bill. Having just learned about rsync (still getting my UNIX legs...), I read about RsyncX on www.macosxhints.com. This is just what I needed. Thanks!

RsyncX Commentarychanging hard link is bad - Version: 2.0c, 3/5/2004 10:16AM PST

2 things. First, great stuff! Hopefully apple gets on the ball and includes this as part of it's next release as rsyncx or rsync_hfs (and not replace the standard rsync)

secondly, I have to agree with a lot of other complaints: It really REALLY shouldn't change the hard link to /usr/bin/rsync, but should in fact install as rsync_hfs only (maybe with a link to rsyncx)

Installing this pkg as it is kills all of my rsync based scripts (that use the *nix rsync and not rsyncx which is _not_ compatible with standard rsync .. results in damaged and unusable files on the other end). This results in users that require the original rsync to go back and 'fix' what the pkg modified in the first place!

RsyncX ReviewFinder color labels? - Version: 2.0c, 2/5/2004 10:32PM PST

zeleny
Works fine for me. Just two notes:
  • Panther Finder labels are not rsynced.
  • I agree that it would be better to install it as /usr/bin/rsyncx instead of replacing Apple's rsync.
Thanks!

...NOT MESSING WITH APPLE'S RSYNC?!!?!

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 732352 28 Jan 05:44 rsync*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 211860 29 Jan 20:19 rsync_orig*

geez...time to sift through this mess ONCE AGAIN after believing the readme which says apple's rsync WILL NOT BE TOUCHED!

get it together guys...we rsyncx should exist as rsyncx and should be evoked by using rsyncx. apple's rsync SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED!!!

I also used rsyncx version 1.7c for my backup and although it seemed great at first I ran into several reliability problems. Some files weren't copied and "attrib17"-something files were thrown all over the place when upgrading to 10.3. Unuseable.

I switched to psync but I really missed the easiness and features of rsync. I would welcome feedback from users if this version is again reliable. rsync itself is just too great. I wonder why these patches don't go straight into the main trunk of rsync.

Apple's rsync does not handle HFS+ or resource forks. So it's pretty worthless to most Mac users. If they included these features, not as many people would sign up for .Mac backup! :-) RSyncX includes supports for HFS+ and it knows about resource forks. I wish Apple would just kill resource forks once and for all, but until that day comes, you need RSyncX or psync.

Older versions of RSyncX apparently sucked, so lots of people used the much less featureful psync instead. I for one plan to try this version and encourage others to do the same.
