Spring Cleaning ReviewUntrustworthy vendor - Version: 10.0, 4/25/2009 03:42AM PST

I am completely annoyed by their dial home e-mail tool. There is no information on what they send out, how they use it or where it goes. Fortunately, PGP blocks it most of the time, but I've had it and am removing the utility in favor of CleanMyMac.

Spring Cleaning ReviewGood program but untrustworthy company - Version: 10.0, 10/24/2008 01:53AM PST

I have been evaluating 'Spring cleaning' for over a week, cleaning up duplicate files on my mac. I have no qualms about how the program runs and for what I want it to do it is very good, put simply its quite fast and it works well with a lot of options and filters available to narrow and speed up your search.

BUT...

Since installing the program (remember only for evaluation) I have been constantly nagged by a program called 'schedulemailer' trying to access my keychain on my mac, more specifically for my email account passwords. I was not made aware that this hidden app would be installed and running in the background on my mac persistently trying to access my most private data. After some research on various forums I read some published responses from Smith Micro about the application. None of them specifically defined the reason or function of the program, apart from it 'protects' your mac.

You make your own minds up but for me they have betrayed my trust and I for one will not be reinstalling any of their software again once I get rid of it.

Spring Cleaning ReviewSorry my previous post was confusing to many. - Version: 10.0, 9/8/2008 09:43PM PST

In my previous post I was commenting on Spring Cleaning Version 9.1 which performed well for me in several tests without any errors or any of the problems some other users have reported. I was recommending version 9.1 and advising against any previous versions since I had encountered problems with the older versions in the past. I apologize for the confusion that the previous post caused.

I have not used the newest version at this time, version 10, so I cannot comment on it. However there are a lot of free software options that can do many of the same things as Spring Cleaning.

Again I am sorry for the confusion from my previous post.

I've foolishly tried several versions of this product through the years (and on several Macs) and it has NEVER worked correctly, causing far more harm than good. It's your call if you want to try it, but I'd suggest you avoid it like the plague. I can guarantee I'LL never download it again.

Spring Cleaning CommentarySolve One 'Problem', Create Two - Version: 9.1.1, 5/23/2008 12:18AM PST

Over my years as an Apple Consultant I've just seen too many clients who OVER-CLEANED thier computer lives with this utility as it cheerfully mucked about in Library and Preferences folders and offered to 'rid' them of stuff just plain _best left alone_. Usually nothing fatal - but all this program seems to really do is try to make people feel good about having spent money on it, and 'solving' trivial, imaginary 'problems' that have nothing to do with why their Mac may be wonky - and perhaps making it just a little too easy to delete things they shouldn't if they really decide to. Ditto with Internet Security which 'protects' them from all sorts of imaginary 'threats' -- that IF they had a good backup, IF they practiced safe, sensible computing, email and web practices -- would be a non-issue anyways. At best, this is Peace Of Mind software, at worst - Piece Of Worthless Cr*p.

Spring Cleaning CommentaryHistory will always repeat itself. - Version: 9.1, 2/10/2008 12:00AM PST

This app has been a turkey since day one. Even the mainstream Mac press, which typically gives at least 3.5 stars to its advertisers, has never been enamored of this utility. The reviews always came out "kind of" positive, but if you read between the lines...
So I'm kind of surprised that there are people out there that still get suckered in. Always check forums and read reviews from actual users before you buy junk like this.

Spring Cleaning CommentaryThe best ..I am surprised by the difference in 9.1 - Version: 9.1, 2/10/2008 12:00AM PST

First off I was never a big fan of Spring Cleaning since I tried it on OS 9 back when around version 7 or so was out and then tried version 8 with no big differences. Then version 9 which was ok but lacked in performance and still wasn't as good as some free software like Onyz and others. I did not expect much with the 9.1 but I was greatly surprised. It has been optimized for OS 10.5 Leopard and the performance has been greatly increased. All housekeeping scripts run in around a minute, rebuilding prebindings, system caches and uninstaller are now better than any other software. Including Onyx. MacPilot, *censored*tail and others.

I must say I was shocked and will not recommend this software to anyone.

I have version 8.0 and it won't open and then crashes when I do get it to function.

There are other programs superior to Spring Cleaning that accomplish the same and they are much cheaper. You can find them on VersionTracker.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 9 times? There are no words to describe the horrible feeling of having paid to upgrade, only to have the new version be no better, with no improvements to the many problems. I have consistently had to uninstall both Spring Cleaning and the equally horrible Internet Cleanup by the same company because they were screwing up my mac.

Actually, I realized what it's like: like being Charlie Brown, and hoping / believing that Lucy won't pull the football away at the last second...until she does, again.
