What's new in this version:

  • Peak 4.14 has a new Core Audio driver with several enhancements and fixes:
    • provides a higher quality real-time sample rate converter when playing audio documents with a sample rate that is different from the supported sample rates of the audio device being played on.
    • only allows recording at the sample rates supported by the audio hardware. If you need an audio recording at a different sample rate than the supported recording rates, BIAS recommends that you use the DSP process "Convert Sample Rate..." after recording for optimal results.
    • fixes a problem where unplugging an external firewire or USB audio device caused Peak to crash.
    • fixes a problem where recording with a USB device on OS 10.4 (Tiger) resulted in "clock noise" and required users to use an aggregate device as a workaround.
    • the Core Audio driver no longer defaults to a sample rate of 44.1kHz on initialization but uses whatever sample rate the audio device is currently set at.
    • the hardware buffer size range in Peak 4.14 has been narrowed as some of the previous allowable values could cause instability.
  • A new feature, "Auto Detect Regions" has been added to the list of available DSP processes.
  • A new feature allows AIFF files with loops to turn the loop flag inside the file on or off by turning Peak's Play Loop option on or off before saving the file.
  • fixes a problem in OS 10.4 (Tiger) where plug-ins such as LameLib could not be added to the application through the Finder's Get Info dialog.
  • fixes a problem in OS 10.4 (Tiger) where the Buffer Underrun Protection checkbox was disabled in the Burn Audio CD dialog.
  • fixes a problem where the Burn Speed popup menu in the Burn Audio CD dialog was empty in OS 10.4 (Tiger).
  • fixes a problem where Peak would not select the entire audio document if a selection existed for some DSP operations that can only be performed on the entire audio document.
  • fixes a problem where the Record Setting's "Auto" sample rate feature would not work properly.
  • fixes a problem opening a QuickTime movie with no audio track.
  • fixes a problem where the Paste icon would not show up in the toolbar.
  • fixes a problem editing marker when time units were set to Bars|Beats caused the marker to jump ahead to the next beat.
  • fixes a problem for some users without a built-in audio input that received a Core Audio error message every time they launched Peak.
  • fixes a problem where SoundSoap Pro and SoundSoap 2 were not available as a VST plug-in for Peak Express.
  • fixes a problem where Peak did not save pow-R dithering preferences.
  • fixes a problem where moved markers and regions disappeared at certain zoom levels.
  • fixes a problem where an audio file was overwritten as an 8-bit file after exporting 8-bit regions from the file, editing the file and then saving.
  • fixes a problem where edits made in one channel of a stereo audio file created a blend on both channels of the file.
  • fixes a problem where "Go To..." times were rounding down (or truncating) when entering fractions of seconds.
  • fixes a problem with errors bouncing the playlist.
  • fixes a problem where "Stop and Extend Selection" was not working.
  • fixes a graphic display problem in the Loop Tuner dialog.
  • fixes a problem where loading and running a saved batch processing script that required selected audio could crash Peak.
  • fixes a problem where the batch file processor could process incompatible bit depths.
  • fixes a problem where a crash could occur opening 24-bit 'sowt' (little-endian) documents.
  • fixes a problem where resizing contents window would cause the buttons on the contents window to fail to redraw.
  • fixes a problem where a crash could occur using VST plug-ins processing at extremely low buffer sizes.
  • fixes a problem where clicking a marker button in the contents window after selecting an item in the window for editing would cause a crash.
  • fixes a problem where choosing Bars/Beats would not change the audio document's timeline increments.
  • fixes a problem where the Loop Tuner dialog could stick to the cursor.
  • fixes a problem where clicking on the Invert button in the toolbar displayed a different button.
  • fixes a problem where clicking on the Swap Channels button in the toolbar brought up the Normalize dialog.
  • fixes a problem where pressing the Help key on the keyboard displayed an older Peak 3.0 Help dialog.

BIAS Peak DV ReviewPeak DV is a good audio program. - Version: 3.2.1, 8/3/2004 02:25PM PST

Goldfinger7400
I don't know what everyone is going on about. The upgrade process is rather convoluted, but that is just because there is a very usable free trial that becomes the full version with an authorization code. I haven't bought 4.0 and don't know if it's possible to upgrade from 3, but at least I was able to upgrade the copy that came with Final Cut Pro 2 to the 3.2.1 version.

Very good option for basic sound editing needs. I used to use Amadeus, but numerous playback and conversion issues brought me back to Peak. Very fast and responsive interface, good support for the newest mac models. A couple stability problems but I haven't found anything better so far.

StrikeOut
I've had this product for years but seldom use it since others are available. I've upgraded regularly and suffered through the glitches and hiccups and problems of a product from BIAS.

Example, the "updater" for Peak DV 4.1.1 doesn't exist. When you log in to download, all you'll get is 4.1 which came out some time ago. Click on the Support link? Nothing happens. Broken link. How about http://www.bias-inc.com/support? Well, that opens the directory in your browser (very insecure operation).

Yeeesh.
