The only recording software for my iMac...!

- Version: 3.0, 2/12/2004 06:01AM PST
Homeward
My iMac is always busy: serving music wirelessly, acting as a print server and proxy for my satellite connection, etc. -- and I'd really struggled to find software for recording my LPs so I could burn them to CDs and MP3s whilst it was doing all this....
recorder.xhead, however, does this wonderfully, with no drop-outs, pops or clicks... -- no matter whether I'm using somrthing 'simple' like Griffin's iMic, or something a little more sophisticated, such as M-Audio's FireWire Audiophile; and, on the odd occasion that I've needed to contact them, their customer service has been immediate and very helpful!
I know this sounds a little 'gushing', but I had convinced myself that I couldn't digitize LPs successfully until I tried this out... -- and considering I own several hundred of the things (spread over several heavy cardboard boxes...), this really is a life-saver.
A wonderful little app; and well worth the money (...especially as the upgrade to 3.0 from 2.1 was free :-)!

leoofborgI've had email with the developers -- they're responsive and they're changing their docs. I've given them my suggestions, to which I add the suggestion that they allow at least 30 seconds to 1 minute in the demo version.
Let's see what the next version of this app has to offer.

1. I will correct web page to say converts to .mp3 files
2. The README does state that it only converts to .mp3
3. You can try it without a registration code. That's the demo. It will record for 10 seconds of sound. We have people recording 2-3 hours worth of sound with no problems as well.
4. For any of you that got crappy sound recordings, what kind of mac and mic
were you using? All of the sounds on our app page www.xheadsoftware.com/recorder_xhead.asp were recorded on a standard
flat panel iMac using the built-in mic and the sound quality is excellent. It's been tested on iMac, ibook, and 12, 15 and 17 inch PowerBooks and works perfect.
5. .mp4 files do play just fine using QuickTime 6.2
6. It also works perfect with Griffin Technologies iMic.
7. Most of our customers are using this just fine without problems. If you have problems, email us we'll be glad to look into your specific situation.

Better Sound (prefPane) + Audio Recorder 1.3 (both free) = Nirvana. The author of this app neglected to tell us (except buried in a PDF FAQ in his support pages that his app can't save mp3, only play it. He -can- save mp4, but then you can't play it on your iPod. His mp4s cause Quicktime errors with 6.2, soooo you either need Cleaner or a Unix tool like FFMPEG to convert to mp3 (which I couldn't get his app to do). Sounds like deceptive advertising to me.
Audio Recorder does spool'n'save to mp3. Combine this with 'Better Sound' for gain control and you have something free that beats this marketing ploy hands down. At least I can study and practice Japanese and German without losing files and time to a 'technicality of Quicktime.'
And it is very simple to use... Definitely worth the $10.
