I do not recommend upgrading to 4.0.5 until the design and the bugs are fixed. The company has become un-responsive. Go elsewhere for this kind of money. You deserve a stable program that doesn't throttle up the CPU after use, that doesn't create a cute design that makes it harder to create favorite folders to refer to, and that actually works.

Support has gone to the dogs as well. Their site is designed well, and I've used this product since version 1. I wish I had NEVER upgraded. Stick with 3.

Transmit CommentaryTerrific App, but costly. - Version: 4.0.4, 6/7/2010 06:27AM PST

As a longtime Cyberduck user I recently tested out Transmit for a few weeks.
Feature wise the program is excellent and it does transfer faster than Cyberduck, especially for directory listing.

Having said that am I compelled to switch, no.

The reason being the cost. Although I would love to support a pure Cocoa developer and move away from Cyderduck and Java, at it's current $34 it's just too pricey. If you are someone that does an inordinate amount of transferring than the price might be fine.

A user like myself that might just weekly transferred files to my website and transfer files onto my LAN media server, than it's a bit steep.

Priced at about $19.99 and I think it would then be a worthwhile purchase even for casual users.

Transmit is vastly superior to the other SFTP programs I have tried (MacFSTP, Fugu, Cyberduck and Fetch). I have used version 3 for two months and recently upgraded to version 4. I operate 24 sites with 5000+ pages and upload frequently to many of them. Once installed, it is very easy to use. The upload/download window enables me to flit from site to site in about one second. Uploads of small pages take only one second; larger ones are still very fast. The window has two sections. You can set up "favorites" for as many sites (or directories) as you like. The program can be configured so that when a directory opens in the right side of the window for the remote location, the corresponding directory on the hard drive opens in the left window. That is my favorite feature. Further navigation is a snap because each window operates just like the Finder. When I installed version 4, I was disappointed that the text in the right window was so large that the window occupied the whole screen. When I "complained" to the company, I got an email a few hours later telling me how to resize the display the way I wanted it. The documentation is quite thorough. It is possible to use the software without reading the manual, but I suggest reading it (access via "help"), because many features are not intuitive. My one experience suggests that if users encounter a problem, the company will probably provide quick support.
