MPlayer CommentaryMPlayer confusion explained... - Version: 2.0b8r5, 2/9/2009 09:35AM PST

I just notified VT of the correct link to the Developer's Site for v2. Until they correct it, here it is as well:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/

There is a certain eccentricity regarding MPlayer. There are essentially three separate development tracks:

1) The Version 1 track is the original and is actively run by the developers who write ffmpeg, officially maintained by Nicolas Plourde. They actively maintain the CLI version but also have an active GUI version. Version 1 has been updated into a Universal Binary. The most recent version is v1.0rc2, released in January 2009.

2) The Version 2 track is currently at a dead end, kept over at SourceForge, as indicated by the URL I posted above. On their website the last version is listed as v2.0b8r5. But when you actually run it, you'll find in the About Box tht what you have is v2.0b95. (>_<) Version 2 stopped development in 2005. It was never updated beyond PPC compatibility. Therefore, it runs in Rosetta on Intel Macs and is IMHO antiquated.

3) Recently a third sub-branch began, called MPlayer OSX Extended, developed by Adrian Stutz. It is a GUI embellishment built upon the Version 1 track. It is 'unofficial' but offers some well acclaimed ease of use improvements. This is the version people currently prefer. It is actively updated and keeps up with the most recent edition of the Version 1 track. The most recent version is 'rev8'. It is Universal Binary.

Summary: Version 1 is the older, original development track, but it is also the only active branch. Version 2 started later, but is currently a dead project. I personally recommend going for MPlayer OSX Extended.

What I do: I have one folder for all three. Inside it I have separate folders for v1, v2 and Extended. I have all three in my Dock. But the one I use most is Extended.

MPlayer CommentarySneaky indeed! - Version: 2.0b8r5, 1/20/2009 10:29PM PST

I was using my old G4, which had the "proper" version of MPlayer, not this silly MPlayer 2 that I stumbled upon. MPlayer 2 can't handle WMV files, while MPlayer runs them like a charm.

Avoid MPlayer 2, that's my opinion.

MPlayer CommentaryThis is the wrong place for latest MPlayer - Version: 2.0b8r5, 12/26/2007 10:22PM PST

MPlayer is based on Open Source code, and two different people have developed different versions. The one here called MPlayer 2, and another version called MPlayer (version 1). The 2 versions are not connected. MPlayer 2 is no longer being developed so you need MPlayer which you can download from here:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

Or to view it in Versiontracker go here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27163

(Hopefully this will be the last comment here, and everyone will go download the version still being developed).

MPlayer Review.NSV (WinAmp) video in OS X can no longer be played!! - Version: 2.0b8r5, 7/8/2007 12:59PM PST

modingo
With this beta 2 version, WinAmp Windows media that played fairly well in Mplayer Version 1.0r1, can no longer even open a .nsv file. Users will soon have no way (w/o compiling their own open source player or using a virtualization program on an Intel mac) to play the proprietary WinAmp video (.nsv). This is really too bad.

Mplayer Version 1.0r1 atleast could play some of these! I do not recommend this beta. Even the newer version that says it is fixed. Sorry folks...it's still broken.

Full of bugs. Playlists can not be saved. playlists can not be shuffled. clicking the play button only plays the first movie in the playlist. It doesn't go on to the next movie even when the play mode is set to continuous.

1. check your Mac OS X Version!

2a. Do you have Panther (10.3.x) ???

2b. or Tiger (10.4.x) ????

3a. for Panther you'd better go with VLC media Player

    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738

3b. for Tiger (10.4.8) try the official (Linux) MPlayer ported to Mac OS X

Note: You do not want to use this version of Mplayer, which is the best way to watch any kind of movie in Mac OS X. Go to this URL

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27163

to get the "real" version, which is 1000% better. It's a Universal Binary, it isn't split into two apps for some reason, and has massive user interface improvements.

Go get it now. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

MPlayer CommentaryMPlayer 1 vs. MPlayer 2 - Version: 2.0b8r5, 4/25/2006 09:17PM PST

MPlayer OS X is based on an open source Linux player called MPlayer (no surprise there :-) http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

Now 2 different people have taken this code and packaged it for OS X. Those linked to from VersionTracker (who have called it MPlayer for OSX version 2, which is a cheat really) here : http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/

and another here:
http://www.haque.net/software/mplayerosx/cvs/

This latest is based on the latest CVS builds from the Linux project, and so theoretically should be more up to date (although it may introduce a bug or two if the build is cutting-edge).

Which of the two is better is difficult to say but the latter just looks more OS X. Only one Window opens, and it has a much better interface, so I'd recommend people to go with that. (but try both).

I am confused too and they seem to be made by different ppl. I've just discovered the "version 1" and I found it much better in video format support, better UI. faster.
