Cleaner ReviewHORRIBLE customer support and upgrade path - Version: 6.5, 8/23/2006 03:51PM PST

After not being able to order an upgrade on their web site (errors on their order page), I called their customer support. I've been a user since V1.0 when it was developed by Terran and I gave Autodesk two of my original serial #'s for an upgrade path. They told me that both of them were not valid serials and they couldn't help me. WTF? I also tried the trial and barely anything worked on it, including H264. These people obviously don't want any continued or new users for this product. I was furious that they "couldn't find" both of my original serial numbers that bought legally and have used for years. I'm sure as hell not buying it for the NEW price now. Horrible customer support.. AAArrrgghhh.

Cleaner Reviewcleaner 6.5: A long-awaited dissapointment - Version: 6.5, 7/21/2006 02:48AM PST

I went to download the 30-Day trial version, although that name is misleading. It's a "limited to 50 uses" and "add watermark" trial version. On top of that, you have to agree to receive emails from Autodesk AND any company they wish to give your information to. I repeat: it's not optional, the only alternative you have is not to download the trial.

That would have all been fine, if it had worked, which it didn't. I applied H.264 and started to convert a part of a DV clip. The output file was a fraction of the length of what I had selected, and it also created an "unflattened" file on the desktop, which seems to be a work-in-progress file that Cleaner forgot to delete after completion.

QuickTime 7 and/or Compressor will do most of the conversions I need, and I use Flip4Mac for Windows Media conversions. It's not as convenient as an all-in-one solution, but hey, at least they work!

That's it. Bye, bye, Cleaner. Autodesk have had a few years to produce 6.5 from 6, which I was a big fan and registered customer of. But they made a buggy beta version instead.

$599 or $125 for the update? What for, I ask?

I used to love Cleaner, like 4 years, ago back when they were the only ones that supported Windows encoding and supported Sorenson 3 Pro. But now they are just a joke.

Cleaner CommentaryStill cannot make MP4s - Version: 6.5, 2/16/2006 10:53PM PST

I have Squeeze, Podner, iSquint, Compressor, etc etc ... and Quicktime 7.04. All these products successfully make MP4 videos.

Cleaner 6.5 cannot: it just dings and quits. Their solution? "It's QT 7.04; revert to 7.01."

Uhhh - if even shareware products can work properly with 7.04, shouldn't this "professional" not to mention expensive, software be able to do it too?

I've used Cleaner since version 1, and the stonewalling and delays from Autodesk about this problem, which is all over their boards, is pathetic for a company of this size.

It's hard to do business with a company with an "I don't care" attitude.

Cleaner ReviewCleaner 6.5 - MPEG4 Not Working - Version: 6.0.2b1, 1/29/2006 09:31PM PST

So 6.5 has been out for about a month or so and Version Tracker still shows 6.0.2b1. Guess the Autodesk folks haven't visited here in a while.

So far the biggest issue is MPEG4 isn't working. It jumps to completion without creating a file. Other MPEG variations MPEG1, MPEG2, H.264 work. Not being able to do MPEG4 Basic or Improved is a big failing. If you go to their Discussion board, you'd see this issue was first reported nearly 3 weeks ago and Autodesk has not reponded.

Yup, I just purchased the 6.5 upgrade off their site with my old 5->6 upgrade serial number. Its 125 bucks for the upgrade, but apparently is made for Tiger (thank goodness) and supports the latest QT 7 stuff, etc etc. I've used Cleaner since the 4.x series and sure hope Autodesk keeps the ball rolling this time. Haven't installed it yet but its sitting here on my Tiger desktop begging me to, so off I go. Woohoo!
