Product Description:

With over 60 supported media formats, Autodesk Cleaner, specifically designed for the Apple Macintosh platform, can now encode to more outputs than ever before, giving you the flexibility you need to deliver results in the formats you need. With Cleaner software, video editors are only a click away from delivering the highest quality video output—every time.

What's new in this version:

  • General stability and compatibility up to Quicktime 7.1.3 has been improved.
  • iPod video encoding is now supported using MPEG-4.
  • Cleaner now encodes long AVI Apple None files without errors.
  • Cleaner now properly encodes MPEG-2 source clips from the Watch folder.
  • Encoded results from Kinoma PSP are now compliant with the PSP device.
  • The iPod-H.264 Video Profile now creates compatible video files for iPods, for all video sources except MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files.
  • Encoded files are now created properly at the end of the encoded process. Cleaner no longer crashes as a result.
  • Cleaner now builds the Hinted tracks needed for proper 3GP streaming.
  • Encoding MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 source files using “In Pointâ€? now works as expected.
  • QuikTime encoding (using H.264) with MP3 audio no longer gives an error.
  • New users, without Administrator rights, can now launch the application normally.
  • Using the Kinoma PSP codec, the output file name seen on the PSP device is now a copy of the source file name.
  • The option to encode an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream with the audio codec set to MPEG Layer 1 has been removed.
  • Encoding with M2V and AIFF to MPEG-2 now works properly.
  • MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files (muxed program files) are now rendered correctly.
  • Temporary files are no longer left behind when encoding in MPEG-2.
  • Using Audio Volume Normalize now creates a clip with audio as expected.
  • To encode MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 sources to iPod,  you must use the iPod-MPEG4 Video Profile in order to create compatible video encoding.
  • Cleaner now has a new 3GP settings folder.
  • When encoding with audio modifiers, MPEG2 source clips no longer cause Cleaner to crash.
  • Cleaner 6.5.1 is now compatible with QuickTime versions 6.5.2 to 7.1.3.
  • Elementary files are now compatible with the iPod encoding through the iPod-MPEG4 video codec.

After not being able to order an upgrade on their web site (errors on their order page), I called their customer support. I've been a user since V1.0 when it was developed by Terran and I gave Autodesk two of my original serial #'s for an upgrade path. They told me that both of them were not valid serials and they couldn't help me. WTF? I also tried the trial and barely anything worked on it, including H264. These people obviously don't want any continued or new users for this product. I was furious that they "couldn't find" both of my original serial numbers that bought legally and have used for years. I'm sure as hell not buying it for the NEW price now. Horrible customer support.. AAArrrgghhh.

Cleaner Reviewcleaner 6.5: A long-awaited dissapointment - Version: 6.5, 7/21/2006 02:48AM PST

I went to download the 30-Day trial version, although that name is misleading. It's a "limited to 50 uses" and "add watermark" trial version. On top of that, you have to agree to receive emails from Autodesk AND any company they wish to give your information to. I repeat: it's not optional, the only alternative you have is not to download the trial.

That would have all been fine, if it had worked, which it didn't. I applied H.264 and started to convert a part of a DV clip. The output file was a fraction of the length of what I had selected, and it also created an "unflattened" file on the desktop, which seems to be a work-in-progress file that Cleaner forgot to delete after completion.

QuickTime 7 and/or Compressor will do most of the conversions I need, and I use Flip4Mac for Windows Media conversions. It's not as convenient as an all-in-one solution, but hey, at least they work!

That's it. Bye, bye, Cleaner. Autodesk have had a few years to produce 6.5 from 6, which I was a big fan and registered customer of. But they made a buggy beta version instead.

$599 or $125 for the update? What for, I ask?
