Net Tool Box ReviewThere are better net tools than Net Tool Box - Version: 3.1, 7/27/2005 06:32PM PST

rickcarlton
...available from the Mac OS X shell. Net Tool Box's latest release tries to make the process of getting technical network information more approachble to a larger audience. It's an attractive app that puts a decent front end on a number of Unix tools.

The network-to-geography maps are now out of date and not getting updated anytime soon - according to the app itself. Unfortunately none of the pre-sales blurbs mention this - instead they actually advertise Net Tool Box using screenshots from this tool when it was working, including the screenshots here at Version Tracker. Too bad. For better IP-to-geo mapping, consider VisualRoute from VisualWare which offers Win, Mac, and Unix versions.

Net Tool Box is no Sam Spade for Windows - for better or worse. While it ostensibly provides many of the functions - this is a commercial app - something it reminds you of at every possible opportunity. You launch, you wait for a countdown. You try different features, you have to click past nag boxes, other tools simply crash the app alltogether.

The publisher, unfortunately is all-too-happy to accept the money for this product - but not nearly as good about sending out registration codes after payment. Nor does the firm reply to emails. On this basis alone - the app loses any upside by the publisher's extremely poor customer service.

Such potential, such a disappointment.

Net Tool Box ReviewMuch Improved! - Version: 3.1, 7/16/2005 08:26PM PST

kd7dvd@mac.com
When I upgraded to Tiger, Net Tool Box 3.0 broke in a couple of places, notably the Netstat screen, so the new version, with Tiger-driven updates, was much looked for. (I had reverted to 2.5 in the meanwhile)

Also, many of the niggly little things, like typos and UI surprises, have been cleaned up. The UI isn't perfect yet (in a number of places I'm forced to click when the Enter key should be able to start things up), but it's better.

If you threw up your hands (ew) at 3.0, give 3.1 a whirl.

Net Tool Box ReviewStay with 2.5.1 - Version: 2.5.1, 5/30/2005 09:48AM PST

Net Tool Box 2.5.1 is a great product. Mr. Boisseau is correct that there are some useful features to be added, thus v3.0 Unfortunately, 3.0 is riddled with bugs suggesting that Mr Boisseau has moved on to other interests. These are mainly silly little things like typos, UI inconsistancies, etc. Under Tiger, the netstat function is broken entirely. No update for Tiger seems forthcoming.

If you still have your copy of 2.5.1 in a backup someplace, restore it. It seems to work fine under Tiger.
