Product Description:

PGP is a tool for keeping your data safe. It contains the following:
  • PGP Mail combines encryption and digital signatures to secure your e-mail, attachments, and instant messages. While encryption ensures that a message can't be read by anyone other than its intended recipient. PGP Mail also gives you the flexibility and power to use digital signatures that guarantee the message creator's identity as well as that the message wasn't tampered with, defeating anyone attempting to alter critical communication. Use the various PGP Mail options to automatically encrypt outbound e-mails when the send button is selected.
  • PGP Disk allows you to create disks whose contents are encrypted at all times. PGP Disk is particularly critical on laptops, which are increasingly vulnerable to being lost or stolen. By storing data using PGP Disk, users are assured that no unauthorized individual has access to it.
  • PGP Keys is the premier public key management utility. It interoperates with many different public key formats algorithms.
  • Apple Mail Plugin integrates PGP encryption and signing functionality directly into Apple's Mail application allowing very easy to use message security.
  • Entourage Integration also integrates PGP into Microsoft Entourage.
  • Mac OS X PGP 8.0 has been rewritten for Mac OS X to take full advantage of the Cocoa environment. It integrates perfectly with the Mac OS X finder via contextual menus, special Dock features, and the Services menu.

What's new in this version:

If you are a licensed Enterprise or Desktop customer and wish to upgrade to 8.1, please refer to the original order confirmation email you received from PGP Corporation when you purchased your license. The link in that email will allow you to download the update.

For this beta release, all features are enabled and expiring on May 27, 2004.

  • Automatic update notification has been added. A notification will be displayed if a PGP update is released.
  • Apple Mail: Significant improvements have been made to the PGP plugin for Apple's Mail.app.
  • Apple Mail: A new user interface for decryption and verification including direct access to signing key properties has been added.
  • Apple Mail: Various encoding and decoding improvements for messages using international characters.
  • Apple Mail: Several fixes have been made for better Panther compatibility.
  • PGP Universal Satellite and PGP Desktop 8.1 may now be installed in any order. Previous releases required PGP Universal Satellite to be installed after PGP Desktop.
  • Substring matching is no longer allowed for email addresses. Matches must be exact in order to bypass the recipient key confirmation dialog that appears when encrypting an email.
  • Some corrupt keys could cause the recipient key confirmation dialog when encrypting an email to abort. Such keys are now ignored.
  • PGP SDK: PGP 8.1.0 uses a newer version of the PGP SDK which includes various new features and fixes. The following is an overview of the changes to the PGP SDK:
  • PGP SDK: Support for decoding BZip2 and ZLIB compression has been added. Encoding is also possible if you already have a key which claims to support it - such as those generated by PGP Universal.
  • PGP SDK: S/MIME support has been added. This functionality is available only when used with PGP Universal Server and PGP Universal Satellite.
  • PGP SDK: Various TLS improvements including security improvements and support for additional algorithms such as RC4.
  • PGP SDK: Support for international characters in X.509 certificates.
  • PGP SDK: Various formatting fixes including a fix for a crash when encountering a key corrupted in a specific way.

PGP Review9.9.1 looks good so far - Version: 9.9.1, 2/11/2009 01:59AM PST

plaintiger

i've been using PGP products on and off for years, and like others i have had some problems with their bugs, user-hostile interfaces/installation procedures, and questionable support. i can't claim to have really put it through its paces yet, but i will say that so far, PGP Desktop Home 9.9.1 is the least problematic PGP product i've used. it installed properly the first time (*that's* never happened before) and i haven't yet seen any unexpected behaviors...all of which - especially in light of the nightmares wrought by my attempt to use the free, open-source substitutes (GPGThis, GPGThat, and GPGTheOtherThing) - are very welcome.

my experience isn't very extensive, but as far as it goes, it indicates that PGP's the security package to use. 9.9.1 appears solid, and the alternatives i've tried definitely suck.

good luck...

...attached as a PDF to the confirmation email from PGP, and you will find a non-expiring link.

I have never had the kind of problems with this product other people do. And I am not a moron, nor a PGP employee.
