iPhoto Diet ReviewLove the app, hate the damage it did..... - Version: 3.1, 11/20/2007 01:41PM PST

I first used this app 2 years ago and it seemed to work fine. But then, I experienced the same problems as most other users. I ended up wit LOTS of pictures that only displayed as "!" inside a big outlined grey box when trying to view them full size. The thumbnails are fine, but clicking the thumbnail to see the larger view was a no-go. The good news is, is that the pictures are all still on your computer, in your iPhoto folder. You have to copy the file (picture's) name and paste it into a Spotlight search. Then, when Spotlight brings it up, drag it into iPhoto right where it should be. Then delete the other one (that brings up the "!"). It's a hassle, but it's a fix. Now, I wrote the developer, asking when there would be an update. He responded right away. (I was surprised, because a lot of people were saying he doesn't respond and was slacking. So, here is my email to him, and his response. I hope this helps anyone out there looking for answers.

Me: "Are you updating this app? It seems to really screw up libraries. It's
a great app, but if you're not doing anything with it, please take it
sown at this point. It hasn't worked in years.

Thanks. VocalVirgo"

Him: "Hi Virgo,

Yes, I am working on an update for iPhoto 7. Sorry to hear about your
bad experiences with the current version of iPhoto Diet;
unfortunately, the use of GUI Scripting (a technique that iPhoto Diet
uses to remove unwanted originals) appears to be causing major
problems for some users, while for others it works without a hitch. I
am revisiting the code to see if I can replace GUI Scripting with any
other method; unfortunately, the limited programming interface
provided by iPhoto doesn't seem to present any other options. I will
keep the iPhoto Diet web-page updated as things progress.

All the best, Martin"

iPhoto Diet Troubleshooting ReportiLife 08 - Version: 3.1, 9/12/2007 03:16PM PST

I actually don't dare to run a "diet" on my iPhoto library after I have seen how much it has changed after the upgrade to iPhoto 7, so I have one question for the iPhotoDiet developer that I think many of us would ask: does iPhotoDiet 3.1 work with iPhoto 7 (iLife '08) and, if not, do you plan to release an updated version supporting it?

Does anyone know where Martin Fuhrer is these days? I have a question for him before I use iPhoto Diet and his U.Calgary address seems to be dead.

iPhoto Diet Reviewdestroys links for all rotated photos - Version: 3.1, 10/31/2006 06:56PM PST

Uh, well, it slimmed 4 gb off our 10,000 picture iphoto library, however, all rotated pictures are gone. Luckily I didn't empty the trash that iphotodiet made that contains all the unrotated originals.

The rotated pictures still exist in the Pictures folder on my Home folder, but will not show up in iPhoto - instead, we see the thumbnail, but when you zoom in, we just get a gray square with a question mark. Too bad this happened to 2495 pictures. I'm going to have a fun evening of work, thanks to iphoto diet.

If only there was a way to fix this...but iPhotoDiet's homepage is gone. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

My advice: do not use.

iPhoto Diet ReviewGreat App - Version: 3.1, 10/29/2006 06:19AM PST

I have been using this app for a few days and consolidating 10,000 or more photos from dozens of sources. Tryed several different apps. IPhoto Diet is by far the best. My tip: Read the docs on the developers site. Must give 5 stars for their documentation. Very nice. I would also recommend using the move to new album option. Allows for easier comparisons then delete files from there. It appears some very small photos (ie. from camera phone) get flagged as thumbnails. This app is very fast. Good Job.

Once again, a great update to the best (free) iPhoto duplicate manager.
Can't recommend it enough.
Remember to backup your photos first as always.

iPhoto Diet CommentaryHow about resizing? - Version: 3.0.8, 9/10/2006 11:12AM PST

Sounds like a great app, but i'd love it if it would also give some options to resize the massive photos my D70 takes. I don't need ALL my albums in full rez. They're GB and GB's of space on my powerbook! With a name like diet, i thought this would be perfect but i'll keep looking. :(

iPhoto Diet CommentaryiPhoto Diet for iPhoto 6 - Version: 3.0.8, 8/21/2006 06:41PM PST

Hawaiian Starman
From the developer's site date July 10, 2006:

"...the good news is that my testing version of iPhoto Diet currently works with iPhoto 6. I am still working out a couple of small issues (related to iPhoto 6's new ability to link to photos stored outside the iPhoto library), but I'm hoping to get a release out before the month is over. Thanks for your patience!"

This is a great app. for managing Apple's method of retaining images. Wondering when the iPhoto 6 version of Diet will make its debut? Martin?
