Product Description:

BootImage Pal is an application for making boot image design easier. It can convert a tiff image into the .act and .raw files needed by Ryan Schmidt's Startup Syringe application to change the boot image in Mac OS X version 10.2 (Jaguar). It can also convert the .act and .raw data files back into a tiff image.

To use BootImage Pal, drag a single 128 X 128 pixel, 256 color tiff file with the name extension ".tiff" onto BootImage Pal's icon, or drag both the data files (.act and .raw, appropriately named) onto BootImage Pal's icon. Tiff images must not contain any alpha channels. Output will be appropriate for the type of item(s) dragged.

By default, BootImage Pal will try to save its output to the same location as the file(s) dragged onto it. If that location is not writeable (locked), you will be prompted to choose a new location.

BootImage Pal is simply a graphical interface for Denis Bredelet's convpal binary executable, which is bundled with BootImage Pal.

can create tiff images with MacOS X Preview application. The only issue is that it messes the colours of the spinning dial.

a terrific application. With the demise of MacBoot and the finickiness of Startup Syringe, BootImage Pal is a terrific way to create boot images to be inserted by Startup Syringe. I and many others could not use Startup Syringe because most of the boot images in the Resexcellence (www.resexcellence.com) Boot Image archive are in a graphic format or do not have the correct color combination (256 color), pixels (128x128), or correct .raw and .act files (Startup Syringe cannot use a graphic file such as .tiff). MacBoot was great at using almost any image the user wanted to use as a boot image. However MacBoot 1.0.2 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.2.4. If MacBoot is run under Mac 10.2.4, the system will crash due to many types of fatal errors. I told the creator of MacBoot about this problem and his response seemed to be that he didn't care. So I was forced to use Startup Syringe. However with BootImage Pal and the help of Graphic Converter, I was able to take any of Resexcellence's boot images and convert them to usable .raw and .act files that Startup Syringe was able to use. This application is a great and valuable tool to anyone who wishes to create or modify Boot Images correctly.
