Intego VirusBarrier X5 ReviewWarning: do not purchase or upgrade - Version: 10.5.10, 10/12/2009 06:53AM PST

I bought this program as part of a bundle from Intego. They claimed it was compatible with Snow Leopard. It is NOT. It slowed my System operations by 500% and often forced applications either to hang (beach ball spinning) or crash. If you choose the "constant protection" option, it examines every application, web link, and e-mail very slowly before letting the process run. That is redundant and unintelligent protection. When I complained and asked for my money back, the company refused. As far as I'm concerned, the offer is a scam and the software worthless. And it's NOT compatible with Snow Leopard, despite their claim that it is. Be warned!!

Also I have been using Intego's VirusBarrier for several years.
For some days ago I uninstalled the software.
Miraculous what a fast Mac I suddenly have.
For the coming time I will rely on Leopard Cache Cleaner's Virus Scanner.
VirusBarrier? No thanks.

All I can say is that my performance and system slowdowns miraculously went away when I uninstalled this product. I know it gets great reviews, but everytime my system would come to a screeching halt, I would see a great many threads running VirusBarrier services.

My Mac is screaming fast again after removing this product. That's all I know.

Intego VirusBarrier X5 Reviewquite ok really! - Version: 10.5.8, 7/16/2009 09:28AM PST

If you believe your mac needs antivirus protection I think Intego's Virusbarrier is a good albeit a little expensive solution.
It works just like advertised and updates come at least once a week. It is very easy/intuitive to use and almost never crashes. If you're into photos or video on a pro basis you should exclude the drives with the raw material from real-time scanning to avoid a drop in data transfer rates. It's better to run VB on all your drives once every couple of weeks (months?) than to have its real-time scanner monitoring all of them constantly.

I can only give you my opinion on European customer support: they are friendly, helpful and even generous. Don't hesitate to contact them.

Personally, I must say I find the price of the app and the virus definitions a bit too expensive. Maybe Intego could reconsider their price policy. A noticable drop in prices could eventually convince many more customers to buy their products.

One thing, however, that is bothering me is that they are very very slow to implement new features requested by customers. For example, I don't see why Virusbarrier still has no option to close automatically after it completed an on-demand scan of a file started from the Finder's context menu. A price drop and open ears to customers' request would raise this product to 5 stars.

I have used it for years on several macs. It works perfectly well in background. I have never noticed any slow down. The updates are easy and fast. It helped me find viruses in Word documents I received from the Windows world.

Intego VirusBarrier X5 Troubleshooting ReportUSB transfer rates - Version: 10.5.6, 1/27/2009 06:59PM PST

I installed VirusBarrier X5 about 2 months ago on a Dual G5 2.0 running 10.4.11 with 5GB of RAM. I shoot a lot of pictures and I have used a very speedy SanDisk Extreme USB 2.0 CF reader for 2 years that had transfer rates of up to 20mb/sec. However for the past few weeks it had become extremely slow (0.2mb/sec) and "froze" for extended periods of time. Today I disabled the "Real Time Scanner" and immediately my transfer speeds returned to normal. This is an obvious problem that needs to be resolved by the Intego folks.

I once had problems upgrading one of Intego's products. This problem couldn't be resolved by email so I called them. The person at Intego I talked to was immediately abusive and used language that couldn't be used in this forum. I ended up having to hang up on him not only without being able to resolve my problem but without even being able to discuss the problem. I will never purchase another product from Intego. I have removed all Intego applications from my personal and business computers. I do not recommend this company's products to anyone.

I too have used this product for years.
Apart from one clash with SuperDuper in the last version which was fixed, I have had no problems. Support is fast and helpful.
The installation was smooth, updating has been streamlined and now there is no need for interminable restarts as in earlier days.
The speed of the scan is breathtaking compared to Norton Antivurus.
The Auto Update works in the background so you can just instal and forget about it once all the Preferences have been set. I can not perceive any slow down or interference with normal operations.
My only whinge is that apart from having to pay for definitions which is normal, there is a "Filter" subscription every year and I have been unable to ascertain what it is and why it has to be renewed every year

Intego VirusBarrier X5 ReviewThe Best AntiVirus App for the Mac - Version: 10.5.5, 12/26/2008 10:04AM PST

I've had this app for years and I've never found it to noticably slow down any of the Macs I've used it on which include: Mac Pro, iMac (Intel), iMac (PPC), G5, and PowerBook G4.

There was an earlier version of X5 that caused intermittent crashes on the Intel iMac when Read Time Scanning was on, but that has since been fixed, other than that, there have never been problems for me.

Last night it found its first virus too. It found a piece of Malware on my Vista drive, and it was able to repair the file. Surprisingly BitDefender didn't find it (and it's a Windows AntiVirus app), but sure enough VirusBarrier did. I'm impressed and will continue being a loyal Intego customer.

I tried the demo version, and my Intel Macbook has slowed to a crawl. I have removed the software and the problem persists. Any suggestions, anyone?
