Product Description:

MacOSaiX lets you create a mosaic representation of an image from hundreds or thousands of individual images. The individual images can be found on local disks, by keyword through Google's image database or dynamically generated from fonts on your system. You can also choose rectangles, hexagons or puzzle pieces as the shapes of the tiles in the mosaic. MacOSaiX will determine the best unique matches of images or you can hand pick the image to use for each tile.

What's new in this version:

Under Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2), MacOSaiX no longer crashes on reaching the last image in a local directory image source. (ver. 1.0.1)
The code that determines what glyphs in a font are valid is now consistent. Previously, certain glyphs were initially considered valid but then failed to load during export or re-opening a document, resulting in black/empty squares in the mosaic image. (ver. 1.0)
The OK and Cancel buttons are now functional when adding a Google term in the prefences window. (ver. 1.0)
A rare bug in parsing results from Google Images has been fixed. (ver. 1.0)
If an image (from any kind of image source) can not be loaded during matching, a crash no longer occurs. (ver 1.0)
Changing the format of an exported image now properly sets the extension of the file name. (ver. 1.0)

Strange bug - Version: 2.0, 7/20/2008 01:35AM PST

I've used Macosaix in the past, with very nice results.

This new release has a serious bug for me: the nearly white areas are filled with dark tiles.
The borders of the white area are ok, but in the centre the tiles are dark.
In the same way, nearly black areas are filled with light tiles, giving a weird effect on shadows.

I tried many different images, formats, tiles combinations, number and cropping settings with no success.

I wrote the developer, who kindly replied me and sent me a new beta release, which unfortunately has the same problem.
From that moment, I had no more news... he didn't reply to my mails anymore.

Anyone has the same problem with Macosaix?

I liked it enough to leave feedback. It's excellent. You can make fantastic mosaics from your iPhoto library with a couple of clicks, and it's free!

One thing... i use a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz and it slowed it down significantly.

I've used this tool for two years now. It just keeps getting better. Easy to use, fast and mesmerizing to watch in action. I can't imagine trying to do this by hand. Thank you.
