Product Description:

MacOSaiX lets you create a mosaic representation of an image from hundreds or thousands of individual images. The individual images can be found on local disks, created randomly from fonts, found by keyword through Google's or flickr's image database, pulled from iPhoto or pulled from QuickTime movies. You can also choose rectangles, hexagons or puzzle pieces as the shapes of the tiles in the mosaic. MacOSaiX will automatically determine the best location in the mosaic for each image. When you are done you can save the mosaic as a JPG, PNG or TIFF for printing or save it as an interactive web page.

What's new in this version:

  • Added an iTunes album artwork image source.
  • Added a Delicious Library image source.
  • flickr image sources can now search using flickr groups.
  • Google image sources can now search for news or face images.
  • Google image sources can now search the database of LIFE images.
  • Support for transparency:
  • in original images
  • in images placed in tiles
  • in images created by the Glyphs image source
  • when saving a mosaic as JPG, PNG or TIFF
  • Now showing how well the mosaic matches the original image.
  • Mosaics made with small numbers of images now look better.
  • Image sources can now report errors when finding images.
  • Images can now be repeated in adjacent tiles.
  • Mosaics can now be as small as one tile by one tile.
  • Now taking better advantage of Macs with multiple CPUs/cores.
  • Mosaics that allow image repeats are now created much faster.
  • Images are now pulled from QuickTime movies much faster.
  • Can now save images at larger sizes.
  • Improved handling of very large images from sources.
  • The image usage rules (repeats, distance apart) are now always honored.
  • CMYK images are now handled correctly.
  • No longer crashing when iPhoto is not installed.
  • No longer crashing when Google becomes inaccessible.
  • No longer stopping after finding 21 Google images.
  • No longer crashing when an image source is added to a mosaic with no original image.

MacOSaiX ReviewStrange bug - Version: 2.0, 7/20/2008 01:35AM PST

rubecube
I've used Macosaix in the past, with very nice results.

This new release has a serious bug for me: the nearly white areas are filled with dark tiles.
The borders of the white area are ok, but in the centre the tiles are dark.
In the same way, nearly black areas are filled with light tiles, giving a weird effect on shadows.

I tried many different images, formats, tiles combinations, number and cropping settings with no success.

I wrote the developer, who kindly replied me and sent me a new beta release, which unfortunately has the same problem.
From that moment, I had no more news... he didn't reply to my mails anymore.

Anyone has the same problem with Macosaix?
MacPro, 10.5.4

MacOSaiX ReviewIt's great - Version: 2.0, 7/19/2008 12:00PM PST

I liked it enough to leave feedback. It's excellent. You can make fantastic mosaics from your iPhoto library with a couple of clicks, and it's free!

One thing... i use a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz and it slowed it down significantly.

I've used this tool for two years now. It just keeps getting better. Easy to use, fast and mesmerizing to watch in action. I can't imagine trying to do this by hand. Thank you.
