i've just tested at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ with Xupport's network optimization enabled and disabled, for both cable and satellite connections (i have cable, but it's faster by default than a lot of cable connections) and discovered that my 'net connection is actually faster with Xupport's optimization *off* than with it on.

your mileage may vary. i recommend testing your own connection with Xupport's network optimization on and off before drawing any conclusions from this...i thought i should pass it along though...

some time ago, based on user reviews and some feelings of my own about the general design (or something - i forget) of Xupport, i stopped using Xupport and moved to c.o.c.ktail, which has served me well. but i gotta say - with all due respect to c.o.c.ktail, which is a great utility, and no mistake - Xupport's just won me back. for the time being at least. the reasons:

1. the current version of c.o.c.ktail (4.1.3) can't see an active network interface on my machine even though there is one (my Airport card), and

2. the new version of Xupport (3.4.5) does something that i just discovered, that i really really love, and that c.o.c.ktail doesn't do: it lets me change the colors of my Dock and of the little (and by default, almost invisible) "open" indicators that appear in the Dock below running apps.

this may sound like a superficial thing, but don't knock it until you've made your Dock black with gold "open" indicators. not only is it drop-dead gorgeous, but you can tell what's running at a glance rather than at a put-your-face-six-inches-from-the-screen-and-squint.

i still think c.o.c.ktail's a very great utility (primarily because it is), but right now, by my estimation, Xupport has the edge. vive le compétition! :) (i'm wingin' that, btw. ;)
