Product Description:

Meteorologist is the only full featured free weather program for Mac OS X (that I've seen). It was inspired by a couple week problem with another weather program, and I had the crazy idea that I would right a simple program to take its place. Several months later, Meteorologist has matured into a very string program, representing not only my efforts, but also the helpful and insightful comments of those who use this program. Meteorologist now supports multiple cities, multiple servers, new version and server error checking, and many more features.

What's new in this version:

  • Added multiple, simultaneous city support
  • Added multiple city cycling (first two cities, then next two, etc)
  • Added version checking and server error checking on launch
  • Added multiple, simultaneous server support (Weather.com, Wunderground.con, and NWS)
  • Get info from any of these servers...
  • Or get info from all these servers at the same time!
  • Improved menu layout
  • Added individualized unit controls
  • Made Forecast and Current Weather items be set on a per city basis
  • Fixed potential bug where nothing would display in the menu bar
  • Fixed bug where a drop down menu would not always be displayed
  • Lost some features (Clicking on the city name now does not open up a browser... this be a challenge, especially in Dock mode)
  • Still missing:
    • Much of the extended forecast info off of NWS and Wunderground
    • Better data formating
    • Additional Icon sets
    • A more "global" icon

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

Meteorologist ReviewVery good with one serious annoyance - Version: 1.4.8, 4/23/2009 11:21AM PST

I love this little menu bar addition -- but it has one significant, annoying flaw.

It seems that the attempt to refresh the weather occasionally hangs -- usually once a day or more on me -- and you have to quit out of the application and restart it. This can happen if you intermittently lose the connection or if the Mac goes to sleep while it's in the middle of a refresh.

It would be much better if it "timed out" of the refresh and tried again a little later.

That is what lowers this from 5 stars to 4. Fix it (assuming it's still being maintained) and it's 5 stars.

Meteorologist ReviewBest - Version: 1.4.8, 4/29/2008 10:06AM PST

Tried all the others and this one is the best. It uses very little CPU and fits perfectly up in the menubar looking just like it was meant to be there (put there by Apple itself). The preference interface is pretty clunky and there could definitely be improvments made there and in the dropdown menu gui. But, this is the only one I use anymore. Love the radar image (which the dev of weatherdock REFUSES to add) and once again, stable... doesn't use up CPU. The best.
