Meteorologist ReviewVery good with one serious annoyance - Version: 1.4.8, 4/23/2009 11:21AM PST

I love this little menu bar addition -- but it has one significant, annoying flaw.

It seems that the attempt to refresh the weather occasionally hangs -- usually once a day or more on me -- and you have to quit out of the application and restart it. This can happen if you intermittently lose the connection or if the Mac goes to sleep while it's in the middle of a refresh.

It would be much better if it "timed out" of the refresh and tried again a little later.

That is what lowers this from 5 stars to 4. Fix it (assuming it's still being maintained) and it's 5 stars.

Meteorologist ReviewBest - Version: 1.4.8, 4/29/2008 10:06AM PST

Tried all the others and this one is the best. It uses very little CPU and fits perfectly up in the menubar looking just like it was meant to be there (put there by Apple itself). The preference interface is pretty clunky and there could definitely be improvments made there and in the dropdown menu gui. But, this is the only one I use anymore. Love the radar image (which the dev of weatherdock REFUSES to add) and once again, stable... doesn't use up CPU. The best.

Meteorologist ReviewBetter than Weatherpop - Version: 1.4.8, 2/15/2008 12:00AM PST

I used Weatherpop for years before switching to Meteorologist. In that time, I've put up with Weatherpop's instability, the way it locks up every few days or just plain up and quits without warning.

Meteorologist has been rock solid so far. Not one freeze or quit from the app. The only thing I don't like is that the interface needs a lot of refinement. All this displaying is submenus seems worthless to me, forcing a lot of additional mousing, so I turned all submenus off. But displaying the forecasts on single lines is very messy and hard to read. The main information (temp and precip) should be on the main menu for each line, with submenus for the less useful information. Does anyone really think they can accurately forecast the wind speed for five days from now?

And how about a better name? Meteorologist is not only a mouthful, it's a pain in the neck to type. Luckily, I know how to spell, but I feel sorry for those less knowledgeable or hunt and peck typists.

Meteorologist ReviewStill going strong - Version: 1.4.8, 1/12/2008 09:18AM PST

Despite the lack of updates (promised in the near future), this app still works for me - using all sorts of non-US cities - only I sometimes have to quit and re-start to get it to update to latest data. One puzzle: I have never been able to find out what the preference option to 'cycle active locations' and 'change active locations' mean. These are separate options from 'updating'. What do they mean?? There is no FAQ or Help menu to explain. I would be grateful for an explanation. At present I leave them unchecked and do not seem to be missing anything (except the above problem mentioned).

Meteorologist Usage TipNo More Radar Maps - Version: 1.4.8, 11/4/2007 09:40AM PST

I recently upgraded to Mac OSX 10.5 and have noticed that Meteorologist no longer downloads any radar maps even though the preference is checked. I know that this version only supports Mac OSX 10.4. However, I figured I'd be the first to point out the only difficulty that the application has shown under the new operating system. Everything else works beautifully.

Meteorologist CommentaryStop thief - Version: 1.4.8, 9/22/2007 09:27AM PST

I have capped internet usage and could not understand why, only 10 days into the month, my allowance had gone.

It now looks as if the only thing that changed was the installation of Meteorologist, which seems to be taking about 100Mb a day with 4 locations chosen.

As far as I can see it must download the whole pagex4 from weather.com, which includes satellite images and disgards the bits it does not need.

Be warned!

v1.4.8 seems to have fixed the icon problem noted in v1.4.7.

Thanks to those responsible for the quick fix.
