PsyncX Usage TipGetting PsyncX to work in Leopard - Version: 2.2.2, 7/28/2008 10:07AM PST

Mathue
As many looking here may know, PsyncX does not run correctly in Leopard. However there is a way to get it working again. Check out <http://factoryjoe.pbwiki.com/GettingPsyncXToWorkOnLeopard> for instructions to reinstall specific files and get back to getting your disks backed up :)

Good luck and YMMV!

PsyncX Usage TippsyncX 2.2 is good - Version: 2.2.1, 10/5/2006 12:39AM PST

This is a gui wrapper around psync. When psyncX runs it crashes but the psync commands continue to run. The result is perfect. So even if it scares you with the crash, it actually works and it works well. Also stop moaning about it being donationware. It works.. be happy about that. Backing up can save your skin. And psyncX can save your skin PERIOD

PsyncX ReviewFinally, Just in Time! - Version: 2.2.1, 7/16/2006 10:30PM PST

What just toying around with the source code for PsyncX so I could get it to a Universal binary, but great to see the developer beat me to it, AND make it savvy for 10.2 through 10.4 as well!

If I have only one little quibble, it's the extra authentication necessary when creating backup scripts, and it would be nice to be able to save the configuration to a .plist as well.

Also, it's time you used Steppers instead of those popup buttons to set execution time. The popups are ugly.

OK, so three little quibbles. Nice to see this isn't abandoneware!

Firstly it's not freeware, its donationware as dictated by the nag at launch. Upon starting a backup the application automatically quits.

PsyncX ReviewWorst...Install...Ever - Version: 2.1.1, 6/3/2005 03:31AM PST

How do I hate thee, let me count the ways:

1. Had the incredibly arrogant audacity to install psync in /usr/bin, an absolute no-no for third-party crap like this. Hey, you install in /usr/local/bin and keep your grubby paws off the rest of my directories.

2. Took a big huge **** all over the permissions of my hard disk, messing up more settings than I care to remember. Thank goodness for the built-in repair permissions function in OS X.

3. Installed an outdated version of psync, which itself is a confused mess of ****, with multiple "branches" that don't merge.

PsyncX Review"Simply Awesome" doesn't do this justice - Version: 2.1.1, 11/16/2004 01:27PM PST

Elegant in its simplicity, I find PsyncX to do an wonderful job for my daily backups. I have it backup my home directory directly to a partition on my FireWire external. It uses the terminal and sudo to make the operation blisteringly fast, backing up my 14GB of 11,000 files in under 10 minutes. It can also do incremental updates, erasing files on the FW drive that I eliminated in my home directory. It's like than cloning movie with Arnold Schwartzenegger and being "up to the minute". But PsyncX doesn't stop there - it cleverly uses cron to set a root accessed cronjob to do daily backups at a specified time. Sure, I could select every folder in the home directory except for internet cache folders, but what would be the point? PsyncX is so fast that I don't mind it updating 500 cache files per day. The interface is very clean and simple (though the incremental update verbose I had to re-read several times) and the price can't be beat. When I contacted the author for a use question, he got back to me in under 10 hours! Amazing. I have made PsyncX my daily backup program and strongly recommend you try it if your looking to coordinate your daily backup.

PsyncX ReviewAWESOME APP!!! - Version: 2.1.1, 6/15/2004 06:15AM PST

This is simply a great application. Simple, yet very effective. We were stuck using Retrospect to backup over 10TB of data - now we also sync all this data to a different set of servers using PsyncX, and it takes 1/100th the time. And recovering files is as simple as going to the backup directory and copying them over. There are a couple things I wish the app did - like allow you to tile different backup scripts, and maybe save/archive the logs, but these are minor quibbles with an otherwise great app.

PsyncX ReviewSeems to be good - Version: 2.1.1, 6/6/2004 06:20PM PST

So far I really like it, and I don't usually like new apps.
It uses Terminal.app so there is a little delay while that opens so be patient.

I get this error:

Can't locate MacOSX/File.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /sw/lib/perl5/darwin /sw/lib/perl5 /System/Library/Perl/5.8.1/darwin /System/Library/Perl/5.8.1 /Library/Perl/5.8.1/darwin /Library/Perl/5.8.1 /Library/Perl /Network/Library/Perl/5.8.1/darwin /Network/Library/Perl/5.8.1 /Network/Library/Perl .) at /usr/local/bin/psync line 14.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/local/bin/psync line 14.

I couldn't figure out how to make it backup to a CD image nor make it bootable. The GUI didn't provide those options, at least and the language in the installer and here sure made it sound like it could...or maybe those are things you can't do through the front-end? But isn't the whole app just a front-end?
