Product Description:

Simon is a SIte MONitor. This application checks Web and/or FTP sites that you specify at the desired frequency, and indicates when they change or go down. If you have a web site and a broadband connection, or just want to know when your favorite sites change, you won't want to be without this tool. Why rely on web-based monitoring services that check very infrequently, or charge through the roof for an adequate checking frequency, when Simon can monitor as many sites as you like, as often as you like!

Localized for English and French.

Trial License (up to 30 days): free
Basic License (up to 3 tests): $29.95
Standard License (up to 10 tests): $59.95
Enterprise License (unlimited tests): $195.00

What's new in this version:

  • Added an alert panel that appears if your computer is using a version of Mac OS X before 10.2, as Simon requires at least 10.2 to run. It offers to download Simon version 1.0 instead, which does support Mac OS X 10.1.x.
  • Added a splash window in the shape of the Simon icon's "screen", that fades in and out. A nice Cocoa effect. Desirable as loading the Simon Monitor window can take a noticeable amount of time when there are a number of tests.
  • Added animated "static" on the Dock icon when starting and quitting, just for the fun of it.
  • Added a checkbox to the Add / Alter Test sheet to allow excluding specific tests from being checked when choosing the Check Now command with no tests selected, or on startup (if the preference to check all on startup is on).
  • When a test is paused, the status column now changes to a pause symbol.
  • The previous status of paused tests are now not included when determining the status for the Dock. Also, when all tests are paused, the Dock icon changes to a pause symbol as a reminder.
  • The button in the E-mail notifier sheet now opens the Internet Preferences pane directly, instead of just the System Preferences app. Also removed the unimplemented Address Book buttons from the sheet, as per user feedback.
  • Clarified a wording inconsistency in the Software Update mechanism, where running a Beta release with the preferences set to indicate you are only interested in General releases would report the previous General release as a newer version.
  • Fixed a rare bug in extracting the changed text for display, that could cause a test to appear to be continuiously tested when it is in fact done.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the scrollbars in the notifiers tables on the Add/Alter Test sheet from activating when there are more than four notifiers of a given type.

Dejal Simon CommentaryDoesn't work with facebook - Version: 2.5, 2/21/2009 01:38AM PST

It looks like a nice piece of software.

I tried it with facebook and it reported a change everytime it connected. There is no doubt that if I analyze the structure of the facebook page and find exactly the places where a change is of interest to me, then I may be able to configure it. But it would be nice if Dejal Simon could do it automatically: what I'm interested in are the things you don't get notified by facebook:
• somebody writes on the wall of a group of your choice
• there are new members in a group of your choice
The developer told me there will be a plug-in for facebook, I hope it will do this.

Dejal Simon ReviewExcellent replacement for Whistleblower - Version: 2.4.1, 6/23/2008 12:42PM PST

I waited years for James Sentman to get around to updating Whistleblower for the newer APC equipment. Sadly, that hasn't happened (yet).

But on the bright side, it forced me to find a modern solution, and with Simon, I've got all the control over my alerts and AP7900 that I need. Server monitoring is back, and with Simon, I feel unleashed from the server room again. The developer has been open and responsive to questions about the product and feature enhancements. Once I outgrow my $60 license, it'll be a no-brainer to move up to Enterprise.

Dejal Simon ReviewFantastic software - Version: 2.2.1, 2/19/2007 09:20PM PST

I wasn't expecting too much when I started using Simon; I had used various open source monitoring packages and figured Simon was just going to be a nice GUI to do basically the same thing. I WAS WRONG. Simon is full of nice touches and is a very polished package. The flexibility in setting up a variety of tests and customising the different notifications is simply amazing. And it is so easy to configure. The developer is also very helpful and responsive. This is by far the best software I have purchased this year (& maybe will be all year).

But more to the point, it has already saved me money by giving me a notification about a misbehaving server before the problem became a serious issue.
