Product Description:

Simon is a SIte MONitor. This application checks Web and/or FTP sites that you specify at the desired frequency, and indicates when they change or go down. If you have a web site and a broadband connection, or just want to know when your favorite sites change, you won't want to be without this tool. Why rely on web-based monitoring services that check very infrequently, or charge through the roof for an adequate checking frequency, when Simon can monitor as many sites as you like, as often as you like!

What's new in this version:

  • Simon is now localized for the French language, thanks to Philippe Bonnaure.
  • Added an Action notifier plug-in. It includes several attention-getting actions that can be performed, including options to bounce the dock icon, bring the Monitor window in front of other windows in Simon or all applications, display the Source or Preview windows, or open the page in your web browser. Any combination of these options can be performed when notifying.
  • Completed the Speech notifier plug-in, including adding several variables.
  • The Sound notifier plug-in now caches the notification sounds for faster playing.
  • Improved the change logging. If the changed text is long (greater than 30 characters), the text is analyzed and only the difference is logged. Also, Return and Linefeed characters are replaced by special symbols, so the entire change can be viewed on one line.
  • Enhanced the Check Now command so it can be used for more than one test. You can now check all tests at once if you wish. The Next Check Date is adjusted if one or more tests are selected, but not if none are, to avoid making them always check all at the same time. This enhancement is great for people who use Simon as an ad hoc site change checker rather than leaving it running to monitor sites.
  • Added a preference to automatically check all tests when Simon is started. This ensures that that statuses for all tests are current when Simon is started, and is useful for people who use Simon as an ad hoc site change checker. This preference is on by default.
  • Now remembers the position of the splitter bar in the Monitor window. Also, the bottom portion of the window can be collapsed by dragging the splitter bar to the bottom.
  • Also now remembers which page of was being displayed in the Monitor window: Changes, Failures, or Notifications.
  • Plus many other improvements and fixes; see the Release Notes for details.

Dejal Simon CommentaryDoesn't work with facebook - Version: 2.5, 2/21/2009 01:38AM PST

It looks like a nice piece of software.

I tried it with facebook and it reported a change everytime it connected. There is no doubt that if I analyze the structure of the facebook page and find exactly the places where a change is of interest to me, then I may be able to configure it. But it would be nice if Dejal Simon could do it automatically: what I'm interested in are the things you don't get notified by facebook:
• somebody writes on the wall of a group of your choice
• there are new members in a group of your choice
The developer told me there will be a plug-in for facebook, I hope it will do this.

Dejal Simon ReviewExcellent replacement for Whistleblower - Version: 2.4.1, 6/23/2008 12:42PM PST

I waited years for James Sentman to get around to updating Whistleblower for the newer APC equipment. Sadly, that hasn't happened (yet).

But on the bright side, it forced me to find a modern solution, and with Simon, I've got all the control over my alerts and AP7900 that I need. Server monitoring is back, and with Simon, I feel unleashed from the server room again. The developer has been open and responsive to questions about the product and feature enhancements. Once I outgrow my $60 license, it'll be a no-brainer to move up to Enterprise.

Dejal Simon ReviewFantastic software - Version: 2.2.1, 2/19/2007 09:20PM PST

I wasn't expecting too much when I started using Simon; I had used various open source monitoring packages and figured Simon was just going to be a nice GUI to do basically the same thing. I WAS WRONG. Simon is full of nice touches and is a very polished package. The flexibility in setting up a variety of tests and customising the different notifications is simply amazing. And it is so easy to configure. The developer is also very helpful and responsive. This is by far the best software I have purchased this year (& maybe will be all year).

But more to the point, it has already saved me money by giving me a notification about a misbehaving server before the problem became a serious issue.
