Apple Remote Desktop Admin ReviewFantastic update - Version: 3.3, 8/20/2009 10:00PM PST

Apple has finally brought ARD up to speed with this update.

Everything is fast. Window behavior has been fixed, windows stay in the background if they reconnect, instead of popping up and stealing focus. The network scanning happens in seconds, not minutes.

I couldn't be happier with this update. It really feels like a whole new application.

Apple Remote Desktop Admin ReviewIt's a mess and apparently forgotten by Apple - Version: 3.2.2, 5/28/2009 11:52AM PST

It now hangs intermittently and crashes at start-up. Little to no mention of this in Apple's "support" area. Plenty of problems in Discussion Groups, however.

If updating a system with Migration assistant, it breaks the Remote Desktop Admin with no way to fix it.
There is no real "uninstall" feature to help facilitate clean re-installs.
The new screen sharing feature in the OS does me little good for reports and mass installs.

Apple Remote Desktop Admin CommentaryPlease help! Please fix... Remote Desktop Crashes/Hangs - Version: 3.2.2, 9/18/2008 05:15PM PST

Hi all,

I have been using Apple Remote Desktop just over a month to observe, update and control Macs at a School Network.
I've just recently (yesterday) installed the update 3.2.2 from Apple and these are the symptoms found:
Crashes
Hangs
Slow

When I look at the Activity Monitor, it appears that Remote Desktop is 'Not Responding'- this happens when I click on 'Scan' on the side panel.
We have over 400 computers school wide. Again, it has been working very well and was very pleased with being able to update a room and monitor get reports etc etc... but now, after the update it just crashes.
Also, I have 'Workgroup Manager' installed and this appears to have been affected also... when I launch the app, I get the spinning wheel of death- before it was lightning fast

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ARD only to receive an error that it needed to be updated.

Is there a way to revert back to the previous version of ARD without having to update?

Thanks

JoelDC

Haven't used this in a long time, just installed ARD 2.2 on 10.3.9 PBG4; "Uncaught exception was raised", usually associated with far-too-regular crashes - on launch, on scan.

Dreadful!

Apple Remote Desktop Admin Reviewc'mon Apple get it together - pls ! - Version: 3.2, 1/14/2008 09:28AM PST

mfix--2008
ARD 3.2 still does NOT support European Keyboards problerly (typing Umlaut-Passwords is impossible) - and it hangs and crashes and looses configured nodes, IP's, Logins running on Leopard 10.5.1, pls Apple get it together soon - it's quite annoying like this and since Apple made Leopard and ARD... [ For the ones which cannot live with a half backen beast like this I do recommend Timbuktu which is out in the Leo compatible 8.7 Version and performs flawlessly as always ! ] go figure Apple

Apple Remote Desktop Admin CommentaryStill no sorting options... - Version: 3.2, 10/19/2007 03:47AM PST

ovl
There“s probably many fine improvements here, but still no sorting options for the computer-lists !?
Plain old alphabetical would do, Finder-style would be even better.
As it is, you have to manually rearrange your lists constantly, as new lists go to the bottom of the list.

Apple Remote Desktop Admin ReviewCrashes and hangs on intel machine - Version: 3.1, 5/2/2007 05:12AM PST

I used ARD for over a year now and everything worked fine until I got a new MacPro. Then suddenly work was a pain in the a... It seems that Apple doesn't test their software on new machines:-(
I already installed ARD from the scratch but it didn't help anything. Seems that I've got to switch to my G4 PowerBook. Though this machine is five years old it runs everything I need to administrate the whole network, including ARD!

Apple Remote Desktop Admin CommentaryWon't connect to external network - Version: 3.1, 4/1/2007 12:27PM PST

Twistyfaster
Works fine controlling the iMac in the next room over my home wireless network, but I actually bought ARD to administer my 80-year-old mother's computer in another city. Maybe it can do this and maybe it can't (Apple says it can), but I'll never know; the specific instructions for this over-the-internet connection feat are apparently a state secret.

I've been a Mac user for 20 years so I'm not exactly a babe in the Apple woods, but I'm not a pro network administrator, either; documentation sucks if connecting to external networks is your goal, and the forums aren't much help, either.

Upshot: Unless you just need to control computers on your local network, give this one a miss. I've been screwing around with it nonstop for 2 days now, it's still not working, and I'm throwing in the towel. In fact, that's what brought me to VersionTracker today: I'm looking for alternatives that will actually work as advertised without having to spend 3 weeks poring over every little internet discussion forum and looking up definitions for jargon. Fooey.

Apple Remote Desktop Admin CommentaryARD 3.1 Crash, Beachball, and Hang on Intel Systems - Version: 3.1, 11/29/2006 03:12PM PST

I ran ARD 3.0 on MacBook for few months until 3.1 came out. As soon as I updated to 3.1, I started seeing Beachballs everytime trying to Control a system or close a Control window. Also having problem with Video clips not refreshing properly on remote systems. After I uninstalled 3.1 and went back to 3.0 everything went back to normal beside refresh issue. I also downgraded clients from 3.1 to 3.0 (what a pain). Talked to Apple support and they suggested resetting options under System Preferences which didn't help. Reinstalling 3.0 and 3.1 which didn't help. Finally, they suggested whip out system and reinstall 3.0 then update to 3.1. BTW, ARD 3.1 has no problem on iBook G4.

Apple Remote Desktop Admin Usage TipInstallation tip - Version: 3.1, 11/16/2006 10:06PM PST

Remember to install ARD 3.0 onto a machine *before* you upgrade the client to 3.1. Since ARD 3.1 is an updater and you need ARD 3.0 to be installed first, a machine which has already had the client updated to 3.1 will be difficult to set up as a new admin machine.

But not impossible.

Look inside the ARD 3.0 installer bundle, into Contents > Installers. Install RemoteDesktopAdmin.pkg and RemoteDesktopRMDB.pkg, but skip the RemoteDesktopClient.mpkg (that's the one that's causing the failure).

Then install ARD 3.1 update.
