Product Description:

BackLight provides a menu extra (really an NSStatusItem, which are fully supported in Jaguar) that allows you to turn your screen effects on and off as your desktop background. It's quite a cool effect really, but you should probably have a Quartz Extreme-capable machine if you want to handle the load.

What's new in this version:

  • Allows you to change the priority of the desktop screensaver process.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
  • Quartz Extreme recommended

BackLight Usage TipBackLight compatability - Version: 1.6.0, 11/15/2003 08:56PM PST

CDCBrad
I haven't been able to find the problem with 10.2.8. It only happens on some systems and naturally none of mine had a problem. It appears to be a bad preference that's at fault. A user I was working with to fix it removed all the prefs from ~/Library/Preferences. BackLight then worked correctly. He then added each one back in one by one and tested BackLight after each addition. Unfortunately, he added them all back in without the problem happening again. So we weren't able to find the faulty one. If I had to guess, I would try the screen effects preference that is in the ByHosts folder.

As for Panther, right now there are a bunch of issues with BackLight conflicting with Expose and hot-keys. I'm looking for a way to fix the conflict. Hopefully it'll be something relatively easy, but I don't know when it will be coming.

Thanks

I had the problem with 10.2.8 too, but it's working again with Panther. I love it! The only problem is that Expose sweeps it away with the other windows instead of leaving it in place like I'd expect.

If this won't run on your system, take a look at xBack -- it seems to run fine on my systems, neither of which can run Backlight anymore.
