Product Description:

VPN Tracker from equinux is the Premier Mac VPN client for Mac OS X, allowing the user to establish a safe data transfer between their Mac and their company's network. Once installed on the Mac, the corporate network is just one click away. VPN Tracker 5 has been completely re-written from the ground up and optimized for use on remote workstations. As well as an entirely new user interface, VPN Tracker 5 also features a greatly improved IPSec engine and a number of useful features for working within workgroups.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed a rare issue where changing an advanced setting would corrupt the connection. Updating to VPN Tracker 5.2.1 will fix any corrupted connections.
  • Added support for SonicWALL Simple Client Provisioning. SonicWALL Simple Client Provisioning with VPN Tracker is currently available for the following devices and SonicOS revisions: TZ 180 (SonicOS Standard 3.9 or SonicOS Enhanced 4.0), TZ 190 (SonicOS Enhanced 4.0), PRO 2040/PRO 3060/PRO 4060/PRO 4100/PRO 5060 (with SonicOS Enhanced 4.0), NSA 3500/NSA 4500/NSA 5000/NSA E5500/NSA E6500/NSA E7500 (with SonicOS Enhanced 5.0)
  • Connection restart handling has been improved
  • Improved error handling to give more specific error messages
  • Changed default export options to not lock the connection by default
  • Improved communication between VPN Tracker and its backend components
  • Made AirPort SSID support more efficient
  • Improved performance and reliability of the log
  • The log will now display a hint when a VPN gateway supplies DNS settings to VPN Tracker but the connection is not configured to use remote DNS
  • Fixed an issue with certificate-based authorization where certificates would not be exchanged properly, resulting in an authorization failure
  • Fixed an issue where VPN Tracker would quit when waking up from sleep if more then 50 VPN connections were set up in VPN Tracker
  • The newspaper in VPN Tracker’s Dock icon is now only displayed unfolded if at least one VPN connection is connected
  • Fixed a rare issue where a network interface’s IP address was not properly retrieved
  • Fixed a local privilege escalation. Credit to Kevin Finisterre of Netragard for reporting this issue
  • Updated and extended many log hints to reflect the feedback received by our technical support team
  • Fixed a rare condition where a connection would remain in an unstoppable state when resolving a host name failed
  • If VPN Tracker is assigned a remote DNS from the VPN gateway and “Use DNS Server for” is set to “Automatic” VPN Tracker will now always use this DNS server as global DNS Server if connecting the VPN renders locally configured DNS servers inaccessible
  • Fixed a race condition when connecting to servers using “Connect to Server” actions

VPN Tracker CommentaryVERY VERY POOR - Version: 5.0.4, 3/6/2008 08:21AM PST

mahers
I bought it and it never did the job. I sent ticket, reports, all that the developper asked me to send, I tried different configurations, even different routers. Nothing works. Finally, I tried IPSecuritas which is absolutely FREE, and guess what, it WORKS for the first try. So I gave a last chance to VPN 5 and entered again the exact same settings, I have in IPSecuritas and nothing work again. I decided to stay with IPSecuritas. I asked for a refund and they said NO because I bought the soft for more than one month. I spent more than one month to toubleshoot it. I'm really disappointed. I learned something, ALWAYS TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

VPN Tracker Commentaryno customer support if you cannot activate your product - Version: 5.0.3, 2/19/2008 12:00AM PST

Version 5.0 was not possible to activate -- one could only pay for it! Now I had to transfer my product to another computer, but after deactivating on the old computer and reactivating on the new one, I discovered that I had to had the license activated on the old computer in order to export the profiles there, so deactivating the new and reactivating the old, then doing an export and deactivated the old again. Then imported the exported profile and tried to activate the license on the new computer, but then receives an error saying I have activated/deactivated the license too many times and that one should contact customer support, who MAY help you. Contacted customer support but just like when version 5.0 did not work I do not receive any replies at all. Now again I have a newly bought license that cannot be used anywhere. You better expect this kind of non-support from Equinux!

Intel Macs have been out for two years, but Equinux still didn't manage to produce a Universal version of VPN tracker utility - only kernel extension. The utility that loads the extension and established connection was still PowerPC, so it normally takes about 20-30 seconds to launch it.

Now, after two years, Leopard comes along. VPN Tracker 4 is not compatible with Leopard, and instead of making it compatible, Equinux releases VPN Tracker 5. Nearly a month after Leopard's release, and at least half-a-year since early betas of Leopard became available to developers.

VPN Tracker 5 requires you to purchase a new license. What? After 2 years of doing what? There were a few releases of version 4, but mostly minor ones. So after two years of waiting for a completely Universal version we get a "rewritten" version, which costs additional money, and no way to get around it.

The funny thing is that the new version, while Universal binary at last, still takes just as much time to launch as the PowerPC version.

So no, I for one am not upgrading, thank you very much. I've reconfigured our VPN gateway to use L2TP-over-IPSEC and simply use native Mac OS X support for it. Works like a charm, and I don't have to pay to become a persistent beta-tester of VPN Tracker.
