Gutenprint ReviewUninstalls Epson printers Bug - Version: 5.2.2, 11/20/2008 12:25PM PST

I've been using Gutenprint as the driver for my Epson 1160 ever since moving to OSX years ago. So I was happy to see the 5.2.2 update had gone golden. But once I installed it I was unhappy to find that it removed the contents of /usr/local/bin which is where the CUPS elements reside. I could no longer print to the 1160, until I downgraded back to Gp 5.0.2. I then tried upgrading to 5.22 again, keeping the /usr/local/bin window open; and sure enough the install process removed the elements again. This time I had first backed them up, and I was able to install them manually.

It was the Gutenprint Utility for Epson Inkjet Printers (which I used to print nozzel checks) that alerted me to the location of the missing files; other wise I wouldn't have had a clue where to look for them.

I'm pretty sure these file are not supposed to be removed, or that they should have been replaced with something newer.

Gutenprint CommentaryHopeful for Gutenprint's future - Version: 5.2.0beta4, 8/18/2008 04:23AM PST

I'm not a newbie, having owned over a dozen Macintosh computers since I bought my first MacPlus back in 1986. That being said, I'm nowhere near what I'd consider to be an expert user.

Gutenprint has never worked for my Epson Stylus Photo RX600. Despite carefully following the installation instructions, it just won't sing.

I realize that there are approximately a zillion different printers on the market, and it's very possible that Gutenprint will eventually work for my particular make and model. I think it's equally important to improve the installation functionality and GUI during installation in order to make Gutenprint the leader of this niche. Make it idiot proof.

Bought an Epson RX580 that I wanted to use via bluetooth with an IBook with 10.3.9. Could not get to work with Epson drivers but worked right away with Gutenprint. Works for me.

Gutenprint Reviewv5.1.7 is an unstable Developer-only release. Use v5.0.2. - Version: 5.1.7, 3/8/2008 12:44AM PST

Here is the actual news release about Gutenprint version 5.1.7:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=794924

To quote:
"By all means feel free to deliver this release as a
"gutenprint-unstable" release if you want to make bleeding edge
packages available as an option. "

IOW: This is a Developer Release. It is NOT for anyone else.

The current STABLE release of Gutenprint is v5.0.2 from January of 2008. I HIGHLY recommend it. I know of no reason whatsoever to be *scared* of it. It is a terrific update to the CUPS printer drivers provided by Apple. You can read about at:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=768371

Now what really IS *VERY SCARY* is updating CUPS itself into Mac OS X. DON'T DO IT! You will quite simply destroy your Mac OS X installation's ability to print. Apple do a lot of work to make CUPS compatible with Mac OS X. Let Apple provide the updates. (Developers are of course welcome to experiment).

You don't need this and you don't need CUPS updates. This kind of stuff is for geeks. Just have a bootable clone update on your slave drive and an external drive using SuperDuper if you're going to start playing with fire.

The last version I installed then the Apple security update. Then I could not print and had to do a clean reinstall of my system. I think cups clashed with the security update too.

Gutenprint Commentary5.1.x is a Developer Release - not for the average user - Version: 5.1.4, 12/13/2007 06:41AM PST

Please take note of the Gutenprint website:

"Gutenprint 5.1.4 is a development release of Gutenprint 5.1.

*** NOTE TO PACKAGERS: This is a DEVELOPMENT version of Gutenprint.
It should not be packaged as the principal release of Gutenprint
in any OS or distribution release. The most recent stable release
(the release with the second number being even -- for example,
5.0.1) should be used for that."

Version Tracker should alert subscribers and perhaps Dr Sid would have avoided anger and grief.
