Font Pilot CommentaryFont Book - Version: 2.4.2, 1/29/2009 12:29AM PST

Font Book, in OS X, can only preview one font at a time. Oh sure, you can click on any number of font files at the same time, but you then get a cascade of windows. Doable, but tedious to manage. Font Pilot enables you to examine whole folders of fonts at one time - though at the moment it's not working for me, which is another issue. But, when it works, it offers features not found in Font Book. Whether those features are worth $15.95 is a matter of individual preference.

$16 for something that is already part of Mac OS X. What's up with that?

Font Pilot Usage TipWhy Waste The Resources - Version: 2.4.1, 1/28/2009 06:28AM PST

Suitcase, Font Agent, Font Explorer and even Font Book will show you what fonts are not installed and what they look like. I certainly hope no one pays for this add on junk

Font Pilot Troubleshooting ReportSoftware downloads corrupted + Record on Version tracker needs updating - Version: 2.4, 12/12/2008 10:32AM PST

As of today, Dec-12,08, Version tracker is incorrect about the developer. It is no longer Koingo Software.
The software was sold to BKeeney Software, http://www.bkeeney.com/

Beware:
Another issue with the download is that it downloads (with Safari) as a 7-Mb file named "font_pilot.dmg.bz2". When trying to process this file with Stuffit expander, it becomes a 29Mb corrupted .dmg file that cannot be mounted.

BKeeney Software says on their website, without further explanation as to the reason:
"Is Safari downloading your file with a .bz2 extension?
Simply rename the file and remove the .bz2 extension. You can then double-click on the resulting dmg file to mount it."

Doing just that solves the problem. Jus to check, I tried with Camino, and the downloaded file has just the correct .dmg extension.

Note: If someone could bring some light on that .bz extension, I'd appreciate. I have seen it before; what is it all about?

It's not exactly obvious how to view fonts not installed on the computer with Font Pilot. You have to go to the File menu and select Preview Font Files... (Command-O); this gets you a file open dialog in which you can navigate to the folders or files you want to preview. If you choose to view more than one font, the display window has Next and Previous buttons in the lower corners. Once I figured all this out it was easy to click through a folder of fonts. While I use Linotype's Font Explorer to manage my fonts, it cannot preview fonts not on the system or already installed in its library. So Font Pilot fills a niche for me. Though I won't be using it to manage my font collection, it can do so. FP has the ability to create font collections and activate and deactivate fonts.

Font Pilot ReviewVer 2.1.4 works better than I would have expected from these reviews. - Version: 2.1.4, 8/25/2007 06:48PM PST

All the fonts seem to display in their own font type. About 1/3 of the fonts seemed at first not to display at all, but I found that by clicking in the scroll track either above or below the scroll ball brought the fonts into the display after a short delay. Choosing Waterfall from the Font Menu brought a waterfall display of any font IMMEDIATELY to the screen. Very fast.

Font Pilot also displays some fonts not on my computer; it increases the number from my 80 to 120. I was hoping for much more than that but it is better than what I have without Font Pilot.

Nice idea -- EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

But, like most everyone else, I've had no luck viewing any fonts other than those already installed. (And, if I want to do that, there are a number of better options -- including "Font Sampler," "You Control Fonts," "FontCard," etc. etc.

This one was a waste of time, unfortunately.

I can't even seem to narrow it down to a type -- e.g., True Type works, Post Script doesn't, Open Type works, Bitmap or Dfont doesn't, etc. It simply doesn't work.

Ah well. Thanks for the effort.

p.s.: I WILL DEFINITELY pay for a product that does what I was expecting this one to do.

This is a really nice application, I even paid real money for it. It does have trouble reading some fonts like, AlBayan.ttf, AlBayanBold.ttf, Apple Symbols.ttf, AquaKanaBold.otf, AquaKanaRegular.otf, ArialHB.ttf, ArialBold.ttf, Baghdad.ttf, Corsiva.ttf, CorsivaBold.ttf, DecoTypeNaska.ttf, DevanagariMT.ttf, DevanagariMTBold.ttf, Geeza Pro.ttf, Geeza Pro Bold.ttf, GujaraatiMT.ttf, GujaraatiMTBold.ttf, Gurmukhi.ttf, Keyboard.dfont, KufistandarGK.ttf, MshtakanOblique.ttf, MshtakanBold.ttf, MshtakanBoldOblique.ttf, MshtakanRegular.ttf, Nadeem.ttf, New PeninimMT.ttf, New PeninimMTBold.ttf, New PeninimMTBoldinclined.ttf, New PeninimMTinclined.ttf, NISC18030.ttf, opens___.ttf, Raanana.ttf, RaananaBold.ttf, Symbol.dfont, ZaptDingbats.dfont. All and All, it's a really nice application. It's fast and very user friendly. The best part is that it comes from BC, that alone is worth the bucks.

Font Pilot ReviewDoesn't do what it says on the tin! - Version: 2.0.2, 9/11/2005 10:46AM PST

This piece of software has great potential but it simply doesn't do the job. About 1 font in 8 on my computer shows the font in it's true form, all the others seem to revert to Lucida Grande. I'd give it 5 stars if it really, really worked but because it doesn't I've taken 3 off!

Not very impressive. Lemke's FontBook still remains the best but the more I see of these apps the more I think there is a huge gap in the market for the ultimate Font Preview & Print Software. I'd love to be able to write such a thing... I think I'd be able to retire before Christmas!!

Font Pilot ReviewCloser, but still no cigar (or sale) - Version: 2.0.2, 9/11/2005 09:34AM PST

I have fonts from a family of faces in a single file. Font Pilot won't display what each font looks like in this format, just the first font it finds in the file. Other font utilities like Font Thing and Lemke's FontBook don't have this limitation.
