Version 5.7.1 is unfortunately incompatible with Snow Leopard, however the developer informed that a future version will be.

I create a lot of how-to pdfs which include screen shots that are posted on a website for downloading. It is nice to have small files, but it is more important that they be readable. With most pdf compression you get max compression/poor image quality or nothing. The screen shots usually make the viewer think they are desperately in need of cataract surgery. With PDFCompress I can get a good compromise between image quality and file size. And the interface couldn't be simpler. Adjust the quality in Preferences and drag and drop the pdf onto the application icon. It's inexpensive, fast, simple, effective and works flawlessly in Leopard, too. What's not to like?

What a great product! I regularly create 20+ MB PDF files from photo-heavy Pages documents and have been unable to send them to most of my clients. I can now take those files and run them through this app and poof - they're not under 3 MB!! Just incredible!!! I can't believe I never found this app sooner, its integration with Tiger's PDF Services menu is priceless by itself, and I love having the drop-on-app functionality as well. This is truly a lifesaver, and the license will pay for itself almost immediately as I no longer have to use FedEx to send off proposals. What a gem of an app! Does exactly as advertised, and it's pretty darn quick even on this relatively old iBook G4.

There's a color synk utility in Panther? LOL. Who knew? If you want quick and easy pdf compression, don't bother to check it out. Just get this. I've been using PdfCompress since early Jag, and it's knock out. The slidebar sizing is a snap, and it's probably the most stable little solution I've ever used. After relying on it a couple of times a day for a couple of years, I not only have zero complaints; I really don't know where I'd be without it. It turns pig files into featherweights, and opens all kinds of doors for emaling attachments. Really. You'll get a lot more use out of your computer, and your dial-up friends will adore you. Add the fact that it's priced right and the developer backs it with responsive and highly knowledgeable support and you've got a no brainer. Great, great product. BTW, has anyone heard of a decent compression solution for the Windows? My bro needs one. Thx.

I agree, PDF Compress is very useful under Panther. I use it to compress existing PDF files that usually have bookmarks. It works great. It keeps all the bookmarks intact, and I took a 71MB file provided by a client down to 11MB without losing any quality. Great work!
Need for PdfCompress - Version: 4.3.1, 2/13/2004 09:14PM PST

I would second the suggestion that PdfCompress is still useful in Panther. I have created a number of filters using Colorsync. These filters are much slower than PdfCompress and do not give as good compression results. Hence I have Panther and still use PdfCompress on every documents with images. I am happy to find that the font removal preferences now stick, since I always choose None to get maximum portability.

The print-panel issue is a bug in the Apple print panel / PDF Services code that we have reported, but that hasn't been fixed. It seems to affect all PDF Services of the "Unix tool" variety, which is the type we use due to the fact that this provides the original document name.
