Multiple Launcher CommentaryActually a little more than cool - Version: 1.1.4, 4/10/2004 07:41PM PST

John Sawyer
...to be able to open multiple items with one app--it's actually more convenient than opening them one at a time, when you use several apps every day but you don't want to leave your Mac running all the time due to problems that occur when you do: memory leaks, ballooning virtual memory swapfiles, slowdowns, applications that gradually conflict with each other the longer they're left running, etc. So, if you need to open several apps every day, this kind of utility is handy. However, the Accounts prefpane's Startup Items performs the same task. The real problem that this kind of utility should be written to overcome, which Apple has never bothered to fix (this was also a problem in all previous versions of Mac OS's Startup Items folder), is the colliding that can occur when multiple apps launch at once--for instance, Filemaker won't load any files automatically if you launch it at the same time as another app, if that other app comes to the front instead of Filemaker; some apps cause each other to crash when they're trying to launch at the same time; apps trying to launch at the same time can slow each other's launching down tremendously, so that they can take longer to open than if you opened them manually one by one; etc. The problem is that telling more than one item to open at the same time, does just that--it sends the "open" command to each item nearly simultaneously. The ideal multiple-item launcher would wait for each item to fully load before it sends the "open" command to the next item in its list. Any shareware authors care to tackle this task? I don't know if it would be simple or not--I don't know if apps have a way of telling the OS that they've finished launching.

Multiple Launcher ReviewAliasMultiplier X is better - Version: 1.1.2, 1/26/2004 01:19AM PST

I suggest AliasMultiplier X.

MLX isn't as easy to use, and it's more expensive. Not bad but if you're going to buy an app for this, might as well save a few bucks.

Personally I find it just as easy to lauch the apps myself as I need them. This is a solution waiting for a problem, something I realized after buying AMX. I just don't need to launch several apps simultaneously, although I admit it is very cool to be able to do so.

right, although he is not even capable to spell his name correctly: One of the easiest jobs for AppleScript, and that´s for free.
