ecto CommentaryGreat update - Version: 3.0, 4/30/2009 02:49PM PST

whytoi
Gosh, this 3.0 version took a long time to show up on VT. Been using it for quite a while already and ecto is the best in it's class. Small and efficient and does everything I need. The developer is also very good at squashing bugs.

ecto ReviewSorry - Version: 2.4.2, 11/3/2008 12:56PM PST

PowerTama
I'm sorry I plopped down my money for this one.

I downloaded the trial but didn't have time to play with it so ended up buying to have the convenience. What a waste. As another reviewer pointed out, this SW manages to mangle HTML and is unable to manipulate photos from iPhoto.

Basically, a waste of time and money.

ecto ReviewDangerous... wiped out my Wordpress blog - Version: 2.4.2, 2/8/2007 05:11AM PST

Ecto 2 used to be great... but support has been unresponsive for a while and seems to concentrate on Ecto 3. I can second the problems mentioned in the previous post. On my Wordpress blog Ecto wiped out all posts, reported odd bugs and connection problems... it was a nightmare to get things back to normal. Previous versions used to work great, but this one... BEWARE!

ecto ReviewVERY DANGEROUS BUG - Version: 2.4.2, 1/31/2007 09:10AM PST

versiontracker.com53

The developer of Ecto has seen fit to censor my posts on his developer’s blog. Fair enough.

I have written up a post describing a serious problem with Ecto. Quoting that post, the problem is that when loading "an entry into Ecto, Ecto wipes out all advanced tagging, including but not limited to CSS tags, XML markup, and HTML styling. [. . . ] So if, for example, you use Ecto to do a minor edit of a blog entry, all of your specialized markup will silently but surely disappear."

To top it all off, the developer parades only the positive comments for Ecto. He is also unresponsive to calls for bug fixes.

At all costs, avoid Ecto 2 like you would avoid a fatal disease. It's that bad.

ecto ReviewEcto great unless you need HTML control - Version: 2.4.1, 11/28/2006 11:01PM PST

I've been a long-time, paid-up Ecto user, and I'm looking for something new. My main gripe with this otherwise very useful tool is that it completely managles any custom HTML you may want to enter. Not complex HTML, either. Try this:

1. Create a new entry in HTML mode

2. Enter "a paragraph" and hit return twice

3. Enter "another paragraph" and hit return twice.

4. Switch back and forth between HTML and Rich Text mode a few times: no change.

5. Back in HTML mode, put div tags around the second paragraph, so it looks like "<div "foo">another paragraph</div>"

6. Switch to Rich Text: looks great

7. Switch back to HTML, to Rich Text, and then back to HTML: suddenly your first paragraph has a div tag around it also.

Bottom line: if you have ANY need to edit HTML in your blogs, you CANNOT do it in Ecto unless you always use the HTML mode.

It seems a nice app, the only problem is that I can't import photos directly to iPhoto to my blog on blogger. When I try to do it, it simply does nothing... So I am still looking for an app that does it.

ecto ReviewEcto 2 is the best. - Version: 2.4.0, 11/25/2005 01:46PM PST

I played around with all the different blogging agents available for Mac OSX, and found Ecto 2 to be the best of them all.
I have a Wordpress 1.5-based site, and this application has no problems interfacing with it, and it makes blogging so much nicer than trying to use Wordpress' built-in story writing capabilities.
The only drawback, is that it doesn't seem to handle Wordpress' page-creation capabilities, so it doesn't display (or allow you to edit) any pages created with Wordpress.
One other problem is that the included script 'Quote Safari' is broken. This isn't the fault of the script, but the fault of Safari. For some reason, there's a bug in Safari's applescript dictionary that prevents the Javascript portions of the code from working as anticipated. I've fixed the script and included it as an attachment on a story at my site: http://www.graffixjones.net/category/code-tidbits/, and there's also a how-to in the same story if you just want to edit the script that you already have.

This is a really handy little script, so it's a shame that it arrives broken.

Aside from the two problems I mentioned (no WP Pages support and the broken applescript), I'm really enjoying my blogging experience using Ecto 2. Let's hope than another update addresses these problems, but they really aren't 'show-stoppers'... just minor annoyances. One is easily fixable, and hopefully the other will be fixed in an update.
