Product Description:

Taco HTML Edit is a full-featured HTML editor and PHP editor. As an HTML editor, Taco HTML Edit empowers its users to rapidly create their own web sites. It is designed exclusively for Mac OS X and has many advanced features including spell checking, live browser previewing, PHP previewing, syntax checking, and much more. Taco HTML Edit includes a free 30-day trial.

What's new in this version:

  • Code Completion: While you are editing an HTML, CSS, or PHP document, Taco HTML Edit can now suggest completions for the text you are typing. This assists in helping you remember tag, attribute, and function names. Suggested completions include a brief description of the suggested item and a link to additional documentation.
  • Code Coloring: In addition to HTML and PHP, Taco HTML Edit now supports coloring for CSS and JavaScript documents. Coloring is completely configurable, and CSS coloring includes "formal" and "functional" schemes that are available.
  • Tabbed User Interface: Taco HTML Edit now supports a tabbed user interface for both projects and standalone documents. The traditional interfaces are still available through Preference options.
  • Enhanced Find and Batch Find: Taco HTML Edit's Find Panels now support regular expressions. Regular Expressions may be simple, which allows the use of an asterisk (*) as a wildcard character; alternately, the full Ruby regular expression language is available by setting a Preference option. In addition, the Batch Find has been enhanced in several respects, including improved performance.
  • Open Quickly: Open Quickly allows you find files by name, without needing to know what folder the file is located in. You can choose to search only currently open files and projects, or to search your entire disk for a file. An asterisk (*) can be used as a wildcard; for example, you could search for *.php to find all files that end with the "php" file extension. Full disk searching requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later with Spotlight indexing enabled. This feature is really useful! Make sure that you try it out!
  • External Editor: Taco HTML Edit can now be used an an external editor for FTP clients. Please, contact the author of your favorite FTP client to make sure that Taco HTML Edit is available as an external editor.
  • Finder Integration: Taco HTML Edit now supports drag-and-drop with the Finder in projects.
  • Embedded Live Preview: Taco HTML Edit's Live Preview is now embedded into the document window. A separate window is no longer required.
  • Automatic Updates: Taco HTML Edit can automatically check for updates, making sure that you have the latest features and fixes.

Taco HTML Edit CommentaryHow could they? - Version: 2.0.0, 6/3/2008 01:15PM PST

Oh, no! My favorite HTML editor is no longer free? How could they?

Like a drug dealer, the developer gave away the "goods" for free and once we were hooked started charging.

Guess I'll have to go mug someone!

Taco HTML Edit ReviewJust works - Version: 1.7.3, 4/9/2008 10:21AM PST

I can't comment on the beauty or otherwise of this from a programmer's perspective, but it is beautifully done from a user's perspective *if* you want an application which is designed to do what this one is designed to do. If you want to create web pages without seeing code or learning HTML, this is not the application for you. If, on the other hand, you want well-presented, customisable syntax-highlighting, hints when you need them and reminders about appropriate tags, this application just works - simple, quick-loading and straightforward software that lets you get on with it. My web pages are simple and I like the uncluttered, unbloated character of this editor. It does more than I need it to, but the more stays out of the way.

I especially like the latest versions which allow files to be grouped into projects as this makes editing multi-page web sites much easier. I also like the built-in preview which lets me quickly see the effects of changes I make to the source code, and the ability to preview pages in multiple browsers.

The only thing I would really like added - and I don't even know if this is *possible* - would be the ability to have a project displayed as if it was located at such-and-such a point on the web already so that I could see the effects of CSS sheets etc.

I can't comment on the claim that switching off auto-indent doesn't work as I've always liked having it on so haven't changed it. I *have* seen this application improve over time, though, so I definitely don't think it is fair to suggest that the developer(s) has stopped supporting it.

For me, this is an essential, light-weight tool that allows me to design and manage web sites easily. I have tried other programmes (including commercial WYSIWYG editors such as DreamWeaver) but this is the one I always return to. The only reason I'm rating support/documentation as "neutral" is because I haven't needed support and the programme is largely self-explanatory so I haven't used the documentation much, either.

Basically it has three Freatures I love

1. Its FREE
2. This software has a great name, Taco!
3. Its builds and displays a tree structure of the components of the HTML file.

You can't beat it, try it!
